Biography

Birth

Elizabeth (Unknown) was born in about 1635, either in England or in Virginia.

Marriage

Elizabeth married twice, Foulke Jones and Thomas Lane:

  1. Foulke Jones after 1646, assuming he did not marry until after his indenturement.
  2. Thomas Lane about 11 Jun 1661 in Surry County, Virginia[1]

  1. Elizabeth Jones[1]

Elizabeth and Thomas Land had two sons:[2]

Death

Elizabeth probably died before her second husband wrote his Will in 1708.[3]

Research Notes

Disputed Origins

A previous version of this profile claimed, without source, that she was daughter of Robert Sheppard and Elizabeth Spencer, but a) Elizabeth Spencer would only have been 11 years old, and b) sources support only 3 sons and one daughter Anne for Robert and Elizabeth. [citation needed]

Other Notes

Lancaster Co., VA Court Orders 1652-1655
Power of Atty. 14 Jan 1650/1. Will HARRIS to "beloved friend" Jas. ASTELL to collect a/c for John SHEPHEARD. Wit: John BYRAM, Charles HILL, Michael TOP, William THOMAS. pp. 85-6[4]
John Sheppard, who was Burgess from James City Co. in 1644 may have been a brother to Robert, and William Sheppard (mentioned in connection with William Newsom Sr. as having bought land of Newsom in 1640 which was later inherited by Henry Bannister).

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Elizabeth by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Elizabeth:

I've been working on Joneses for a while, so I wanted to see how the Elizabeth Jones daughter fit into things. Reading through this profile, it's not clear (at least not to me... there are a LOT of John Jones in the area) but I was curious - what does the entry about William Harris of Lancaster have to do with this family?
Under "Other Notes" of this profile:
Lancaster Co., VA Court Orders 1652-1655

Lancaster County and Surry County - when they were created in the 1650s are not near each other. Surry County was created from James City County in 1652. Lancaster County was created from Northumberland County in 1651. ~ see this page.

Also, in looking through the changes to see if when it was added to the profile might shed some light, I found a source that was deleted & wondered if anyone knew why:

d'oh! I was so focused on Jones, I totally missed "John SHEPHEARD"!

If you review the marriage bond of Elizabeth Jones and Thomas Lane, you will find that it is the daughter of Elizabeth and Foulke Jones" Elizabeth Jones who is to receive the property, either when she marries or when she is of the age of majority (21 yrs). Foulke Jones bought 275 acres of land in Lower Chippokes from W'm Batts in 1658. This property originally belonged to William Sheppard who d. in 1653. See FHL 7645828 (image 80/746) which gives correct name of Foulke Jones, not Ralph as transcribed by Davis.

Hi Scott, I have questioned Robert Shepherd as the father of Elizabeth Shepherd Jones Lane. Glad to see this removal.

I have had to guess for many of the particulars for her. I know that she m. Faulke Jones and had a dughter by the name of Elizabeth (based on the marriage of 1661 to Thomas Lane. ) She had at least 2 sons Thomas b. 1662 and Joseph b. 1670 (based on Surry Tax Records). I also know that Faulke arrived in the Surry area in 1642.(Nugent, Cavaliers). I also know that daughter Elizabeth Jones was under 15 when her mother m. Thomas Lane. (marriageable age that time.) Now did Faulke wait the 7 yrs of indenturement before he m., thus m in 1649? Thus daughter b. abt this time and would be 12 at time of the Lane marriage. I assume that Elizabeth was in her late 20's or early 30's when she had her 2 sons. If she were 16 when she m. Faulke, thus b. 1633 and 28 when she m. Thomas Lane and had Thomas Jr at 29 and Joseph at 37.

I had found a second Shepherd in Surry who d. about 1653 in Lower Chippoakes, Surry. There was a wil for a William Shepherd according to Davis, Surry Records. Do you know if the original is available?

Please let me know your thoughts. I am looking for a Shepherd plantation, not Robert's in the same are. Thanks, Dorothy Coltrin.

I have removed Elizabeth (Spencer) Warren (bef.1624-abt.1655) as a mother because this relationship is disputed as explained in the Research Notes in the profile. In particular, that Elizabeth would have been only 11 years old when she was born. Please don't reattach that profile as a mother without explaining the basis & citing a US Southern Colonies Project Reliable Source for this pre-1700 profile.

If she's not the daughter of Robert by Elizabeth, yet her LNAB is Sheppard (which is unclear, right?) then, it follows: she's either:
  • daughter of one of Robert's sons, or
  • something is dreadfully wrong with the dates for this profile, her previously-connected not-mother Elizabeth Spencer, and/or her maybe-mother Anne Sheppard.

Is it possible this Elizabeth is the "Eliz. Davis" listed along with Jane Hemlocke and Thomas Harecourt as one of the eight persons transported by Robert? I see:

  1. Priscilla (presumably Sheppard)
  2. Dorothy (presumably Sheppard)
  3. Mary Sheppard
  4. Thomas Harecourt
  5. "Eliz. Davis"
  6. Jane Hemlocke

Hey Jillian, I would be willing to draft a disputed parentage origin section but I don't see why. Shepherd-3174, according to this profile was born about 1635. Elizabeth Spencer Sheppard Warren was born about 1624. Which is an estimated birth date because documents have not been found to prove her birthdate. She would have had to have been married to Robert Sheppard at 10 years old and delivered a child at 11. Also I believe there is there is sourced info on her profile that states Robert and Elizabeth had 3 sons and one daughter Anne. Anne being the only one to have children. I can check all this out later. But if I am correct this Elizabeth is a daughter of Anne and is the Grand daughter of Elizabeth. Spencer Sheppard Warren. I have never been able to find documentation that Mary Prisilla Green and Robert Sheppard ever had more than 3 daughters. I tried to check this out when I first saw it and could not understand how the descendant list works now so I couldn't track it that way. And the source on this profile that may be used for her birth date is not opening for me. So it is my opinion that this profile should be detached from Elizabeth Spencer Sheppard Warren. Thomas Warren and she had only one daughter Elizabeth who married John Hunnicutt. Maybe the profile manager can source her to the proper parents. Thanks Jillaine for your time. I will find the source that states the 2 daughters of Mary Prisilla Green and Robert Sheppard were mentioned in the mariage contract of Thomas Warren and Elizabeth Spencer Sheppard and put it it the comment section.

Jilliane, I have found and gotten the sources together. I will work something up. I have MS and seizures so I will do my best. If I add the sources here and the notes as to why, can you or someone add them in the profile or do the changes. I am not good with adding things. It is like a tv channel changing in my mind every 2 mins. Or so when I have seizures. Should I add the imfo here or pm you. Thanks.

Thanks Trudy. Do what you can and I'll work on the narrative.

I've detached the parents and added a paragraph about the disputed parents.

Next question: how do we know the maiden name of this Elizabeth?

posted on Shepherd-3174 (merged) by Jillaine Smith
This Elisabeth is not the daughter of Robert Sheppard 3 and Elizabeth Spencer Warren. If the previous comment had been read BEFORE all these merges it might have been noticed that they had been detached for a reason. Elisabeth Warren Hunnicutt was the daughter of Elisabeth Spencer Sheppard Warren. Please do the research and put her in correct place in the pedigree.

Trudy, would you be willing to draft a disputed origins section that summarizes the problem and cites the appropriate sources?
posted on Shepherd-3174 (merged) by Jillaine Smith
Jilliane. I am providing these 2 sites at Genalogy.com because the info there is better written than I can write it and is well sourced.

1: Genealogy.com. Home User Trees Kevin-Howard-Walters. 2: Genealogy.com. Home User Trees Opal-H-Hooks.

The info I wish to provide is the following. 1. date of birth for Elizabeth Spencer Sheppard Warren. In 1624 her Father William is listed as living with his wife and daughter Alice. His son William Jr. is listed as being among the dead. William had 4 children 1. William Jr. 2. Alice. Who I can find no record of after 1624\5. 3. Elizabeth who is not mentioned before 1624 so her birthday has been estimated to be after or about 1624. 4. Anne. Who has descendants.

Then there is mention of Elizabeth Spencer's marriage to Robert Sheppard and their 3 sons and only daughter Anne. All descendants of Robert Sheppard the 3rd come from her. The Lanes, Harts and Jones are her descendants.

3. The children of Thomas Warren and Elizabeth Spencer. Boddie states " they may have had a daughter." Elizabeth Warren, Warren-1794 married John Hunnicutt, Hunnicutt-11.

5. The children of Robert Sheppard and his first wife and the children of his marriage to Elizabeth Spencer are mentioned in the marriage contract to Thomas Warren. 6. There is no mention of an Elizabeth being a child of Robert Sheppard and Elizabeth Spencer. And the Elizabeth daughter of Thomas Warren and Elizabeth Spencer was married to John Hunnicutt until his death and she executed his will. Thomas Warren's fourth wife. Jane was wittness to Elizabeth's marriage contract.

So Elizabeth Shepherd Lane is most likely a descendant of Anne Sheppard. There are still many discrepancies in the Robert Sheppard 3 profile.

7. Elizabeth Spencer Sheppard Warren died around 1654\55 most likely in child birth or shortly after the birth of her daughther Elizabeth. Who was raised by Thomas Warren's fourth wife Jane King. Who is mentioned in later business affairs of Elizabeth Warren Hunnicutt. So there were no more children for her. No possiblity of another Elizabeth. I don't have the wikitree skills to tackle those. I hope I at least helped a little.

Shepard-1751 and Shepherd-3174 appear to represent the same person because: Wife of Thomas Lane (b. c1634). Clearly a duplicate. Shepard or Shepherd? I'm guessing the latter is correct. Consider carefully before final merge.

I believe this is the same as Shepherd-3174.

No evidence presented here that she was born in England.

Elizabeth Jones is so called as she had married Foulke Jones prior to her married to Thomas Lane. Foulke is mentioned on page 139 of Nell Marion Nugent's Cavaliers and Pioneers. Her maiden name was Shepherd as mentioned in the 1661 marriage document.

Jones-43131 and Sheppard-996 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, different last name just reflects the different marriages. Born Sheppard in 1635/40 Virginia. Married Foulke Jones, then married Thomas Lane. Same children. Died 1710/1718 Virginia. This is part of a merge of duplicate trees.

Lucille Singleton is no longer a sibling of this Elizabeth , she was detached from These parents.

Robert Sheppard and Elizabeth Spencer a only one daughter Ann. This Elizabeth's birth date is also the same birth date as the Lucille Singleton listed in this profile. Elizabeth would be the daughter of Roberts first wife Priscilla if they had an Elizabeth , which they did not. Elizabeth Spencer's daughter Elizabeth was the daughter of Thomas Warren and she married John Hunnicutt. It is my opinion she should be detached from Robert Sheppard ands the children and merged into Spencer-2005 . Spencer-2005 is PPP so the correction of the merge would have to be determined.
