John (Sheppard) Shepherd was born in Hertfordshire, England.
John Edmund Sheppard was born 20th July 1859 [1][2] at Bishop Stortford, Hertfordshire, England & baptised 30th March 1862 [3][4] at Widford, Hertfordshire, England, the son of Henry Shepherd & Sarah Thake.
John Edward Sheppard, of full age, Bachelor, Labourer of Much Hadham, (son of Henry Sheppard, deceased) & Anne Tinsley, of full age, Spinster, of Much Hadham were married in the Parish Church of Much Hadham, Hertfordshire, England on 6th September 1884 after Banns by E. H. Gifford. Witnesses were Francis James Burton & Mary Rowley. [5][6]
John (Sheppard) Shepherd migrated from England to Queensland, Australia.
On 5th April 1887, John (Joseph Jnr.) Shepherd (age 26) & his wife Annie (26), and their 2 children Lilian Tinsley (5) & George W. Shepherd (1), sailed from London on the "Waroonga" as Remittance passengers, and arrived at Port Alma, Queensland, Australia on Sunday 29th May 1887. They were transferred to the "Taldora" the next day & carried to Rockhampton, Queensland where they disembarked.[7][8]
Following the birth of their third child, Edward on 29th June 1887 in Rockhampton, they went by bullock team from Rockhampton inland to Mount Morgan and took up land which was later called Shepherd's Gully after them.[9] John secured work with the Mt Morgan Gold Mining Co. Following his retirement from the company, he eventually settled down with his sons, who were farmers in the Dawson Valley. He was also a valued member of the Manchester Unity Oddfellows' Lodge.[10]
John Edward Shepherd died aged 77, on 7th October 1936 [11][12] at Dululu, Dawson Valley Line, Queensland, Australia & was laid to rest at the Mount Morgan Cemetery, Queensland, Australia on 8th October 1936.[13][14]
