Biography

Samuel Sherman was a son of Samuel Sherman and his wife Phillipp (Ward) Sherman of Dedham, Essex, England. Record of his baptism has not been found. His father's will, dated 20 January 1615/6, names sons Henry, Philip, and Samuel, all under 22 years old. Baptism records exist for five other children of the family, and Michael Wood estimated Samuel's birthdate as "say 1607," fitting a gap between the recorded baptisms of two siblings. [1] Sherman's 1870 article "The Sherman Family" stated a birthdate of October 20, 1601,[2] but this is the baptism date for Samuel's brother Henry.

Parents Samuel Sherman 1573 – 1611 & Phillip Ward 1575 – Aft 1617 Spouse Esther Burges 1612 – 1646

He was married to Grace, whose maiden name is not known. They were married by about 1633, presumably in Dedham, Essex, England.

The family emigrated to New England by 1636, when Samuel Sherman was recorded in Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts, as the possessor of 100 acres of land. They moved to Boston, Massachusetts, by 31 December 1637, when son Philip was born in Boston. Samuel joined the church in Boston on 1 March 1639/40 and became a freeman of the Massachusetts Bay Colony on 13 May 1640. His wife (Grace) joined the Boston church on 29 August 1641.[3] Their four younger children were born in Boston and baptized in the first church there.[4]

Samuel Sherman died in Boston by March 1644/5, when his estate was inventoried.[5]

Children of Samuel Sherman and his wife Grace were:[6]

  1. Mary Sherman, born "say" 1633; married name Clarke; probably married to Emanuel Clarke.
  2. Samuel Sherman, born "say" 1635; married Naomi Johnson
  3. Philip Sherman, born in Boston, 31 December 1637
  4. Martha Sherman, born in Boston, 5 December 1639
  5. Nathaniel Sherman, born in Boston, 7 December 1641; married Mary Kirtland
  6. Jonathan Sherman 8 February 1643/4; probably died young, as he is not mentioned in the administration of his father's estate.

Correction to my earlier note: I was mistaken. The 1870 article does identify Naomi Johnson as his second wife, but Wood's analysis of the estate records indicates that (1) he was dead before that family was established and (2) he was survived by a son named Samuel, who joined with sister Mary Clarke in making a claim related to the estate in 1662.

This man (Sherman-1635) died by March 1644/5, when his estate was inventoried. The Samuel Sherman who married Naomi Johnson was not him, but rather his son Samuel. The formatting of the 1870 NEHGR article is confusing, but if you read it carefully it becomes clear that the wife Naomi and the children Nathaniel, Samuel, and Samuel are connected with his son Samuel, not with this man.

I am editing this to be consistent with the more recent work by Michael Wood (NEHGR 2013).

Sherman-2040 and Sherman-1635 are not ready to be merged because: Although Mary Sherman Fish is listed as daughter in both, there are too many things a little out of whack, most notably the DOD, which is different by more than 50 years in the two profiles. My guess is that the two Samuels are father and son, and only one of them was father to Mary; the other is a mistake or her grandfather.

I wish I could figure out how to fix this other than just a merge because the details vary so much. I also apologize for not having adequate documentation to backtrack this. I did, however, look up Mary Sherman Fish on my other genealogy site, and Mary was married to Thomas Fish (b. January 1, 1619,Market Harborough, Great Bowden, Leicestershire, England;d. December 1, 1687 (68)) Portsmouth, Newport County, Dominion of New England (Present Rhode Island) That may be helpful, but it was not my profile [1], and I noticed Thomas had two wives named Mary (Fish and Ayers), just to complicate things a little. I'm guessing I got my information from a data match on Geni.com : [2]

Sherman-1635 and Sherman-2637 appear to represent the same person because: Conflicting birth and death dates will need to be resolved or noted in the bio, but it seems clear these profiles represent the same person and should be merged.
