Sherman was probably not her last name at birth.
A Mary Sherman is found as the wife of Thomas Sherman in the 1870 Census for Jonathan's Creek, Moultrie, Illinois. She was born 1845 in North Carolina. Thomas Sherman was b 1830 in Indiana. They had children: William Sherman age 10 b Illinois; Sarah Sherman age 3 b Illinois and infant Cessy Sherman b Illinois.[1]
Mary was born about 1845. Mary Sherman ... She passed away after 1877. [2]
