Research notes

I looked in the land archives and found only one Shields during the time of her birth to the 1900's. This is the only land record for a Shields there is during this time period.

Abstract of U. S. Land Sales Series Description Records of federal land applications at U.S. Land Offices in Missouri between 1818 and 1903. The actual patents and additional information are available through the Bureau of Land Management [www.glorecords.blm.gov]. When I find out if this is her father or not, I will note it here and either keep this information or delete it.

There is also a court record of Sarah Shields over a Partition and here is the information on the record in case anyone might want to write to get a copy.

Also there is a pdf file you can download online at the website given as a source or reference. I also dont have a membership so some information was not showing up, just says like Month Day...born at birth place, etc.

Found a tree online at MyHeritage.com...I am trying to research this out, so If you find this gone...it was not our Sarah's family. Clara F. Johnson (born Metts) Clara F. Johnson was born at birth place, Illinois, to Jno L. Metts and Sarah Metts. Clara married Wm Johnson on month day 1890, at marriage place, Iowa.

These are also the sources I will be researching that has Sarah Metts listed within them. This was found by doing a broad search and these sources popped up listing a Sarah Metts in them...some will have to have a membership fee paid to access, but others may help with clues. Be cautious of Familysearch Family Tree, for they are LDS and they record any and all information...so some may be correct and others are not. This info is donated to them from members of their church or other web sites. I warn everyone right now...they have some mistakes in their records. So be very careful of trusting them 100 percent. Also Billiongraves and Find A Grave are websites that take contributions of family information. So make sure the cemetery is correct and the state they say it is in...I have found these mistakes also...so doing our own research and making sure information is correct will aid in making sure incorrect information does not get added in as correct information.

As I can eliminate sources I will mark them off (delete them). I will leave only those I see proves our Sarah Metts.

https://stlouis.genealogyvillage.com/stlmarr.htm In St. Louis, Missouri I found some marriages and there is listed one Sarah Shields : Akras, Isom Shields, Sara 09-27 1832 Rollinson, William Shields, Jane 06-03 1835

I will keep looking.

St. Louis Marriages (1754 - 1835)

Akras, Isom Shields, Sara 09-27 1832 Rollinson, William Shields, Jane 06-03 1835 https://stlouis.genealogyvillage.com/stlmarr.htm

Comments from Dave Lossos: This extract of St. Louis marriages contains over 4200 names. I choose the time span of 1754 thru 1835 for a couple of reasons. First, it was a manageable number that I could put out on the internet as a database, and second, it's a time period that I haven't seen covered in other media. If this information conflicts with anything found in the "Index to St. Louis Marriages" by Ed Mochel, I'd go with Ed's work since I know how meticulously he researched his data. However, his work begins with 1804, whereas this list contains many of the early French marriages that he doesn't enumerate. I've transcribe and editted this data from the Automated Archives CDROM entitled "Marriage Records: West of the Mississippi". You'll notice that many marriages are listed twice, but usually with widely varying spelling. Not having the original documents to decide which is correct, I left both spellings in the database.
