Jane Shields was born February 29, 1832 in Astoria, Fulton County, Illinois, a daughter of Joseph Shields (1811-1883) and Mary McLaren (1810-1879). On July 27, 1854 in Rushville, Illinois, she married widower Rev. Joseph Weaver Hopping (1822-1880); they had six known children. Joseph and his first wife, Celestia Husted (1830-1852), had a son and a daughter.
Jane passed July 14, 1897 and was buried at Elm Grove Cemetery, Stillwater, Payne County, Oklahoma.
