I do not believe the Find a grave accredited child John L Shinn (1875-1950) to be his child^[1] James died in 1874 and Sophia would have been 60 at the time of the birth.

The early years

James Madison Shinn was born on the 4th of April 1812 in Cabarrus, North Carolina to Silas Benjamin Shinn and Elizabeth little. He was one of eleven children:
