Discrepencies

I do not believe the Find a grave accredited child John L Shinn (1875-1950) to be his child[1] James died in 1874 and Sophia would have been 60 at the time of the birth.

Biography

The early years

James Madison Shinn was born on the 4th of April 1812 in Cabarrus, North Carolina to Silas Benjamin Shinn and Elizabeth little. He was one of eleven children:

He would marry Sophia Harkey on the 2nd of March 1832[3][4][5] in Carrabus, North Carolina, it would be withnessed by James G Spears.

They would have ten children:


Throughout the years

In 1840[9] it appears he is living in Pope County.

In 1850[6] they are living in Pope, Arkansas. In the home are James 38, Sophia 36, Paulina 16, Mary 13 Pricilla 8, Sarah 5, Victoria 3 and Catherine 1. James is a merchant, with his real estate value of about $1,500 and confirms he hails from North Carolina. It is important to note that several of their closest neighbors whee John Harkey and Latitia Shinn

In 1860[7] They are in Prairie Newton ,Arkansas. In the home was James M 48, Sophia 46, Precilla 17, Minerva 15, Victoria 13, Catherine 11, Thomas 9, Eliza 6. He has a real estate value of about $2,100 and personal estate of $1,000 and he confirms that both he and Sophia are from North Carolina.

In 1870[8] they were living in Prairie, Newton, Arkansas. He had a personal estate worth $500 and real estate worth about $3,500. In the home were James 58, Sophia 56, Catherine 20, Thomas 18 and Eliza 15. William Lee was living next door with Sarah and her young family.

Death

James would pass away the 29th of August 1874 in Boone, Arkansas and he would be buried in Everton[1].
