SAMUEL SHINN (4).--SAMUEL (3), THOMAS (2), JOHN (1).

Samuel, the only son of Samuel and Provided (Gaskell) Shinn, was born in Burlington County in 1737. Upon the removal of his father to North Carolina, in 1750-54, the children of the first two marriages elected to remain in New Jersey. Samuel was left with Thomas at Evesham, where he remained until 1762, when he asked the Society of Friends at that place for a certificate of removal in order to settle at Hopewell Meeting, at Opukoneu, Va. This was a meeting of Friends on the Opequan, near Winchester, Va., which Kircheval, in "History of the Valley," says was established in 1739. The name "Hopewell" connects its creators with New Jersey. Thus affection rears its monument to distant places. The Hopewell Monthly Meeting records show

that Samuel Shinn lodged his certificate from Evesham with the meeting at Hopewell, Va., in 1762. He was then about twenty-five years old, and far away from his relatives and friends. It was but natural that he should fall in love. We know that he did so from the Hopewell records, which set out that on 5/5/1764 Samuel Shinn had been married at Crooked Run by a hireling priest, and refused to make
acknowledgments. He was disowned. All we know of the young woman is that her name was Anna. This couple remained for a few years in Frederick County and then followed the other Shinns into Harrison C
ounty. In what part of the county he located I do not know. Some traditions say on "Simpson's Creek," others on "Rock Camp." All traditions agree that there were several Samuels from 1780 to 1800 in Harrison County. There was a Samuel, son of Benjamin, on Rock Camp; and Samuel, son of Clement, on Simpson's Creek. Then there was a Samuel, older than either of these, called "Old Samuel Shinn." This
must have been Samuel, the subject of this sketch. Again, all traditions agree that the Jackson County Shinns originated in Harrison County, on Simpson's Creek. The Jackson County people trace to Samuel from Harrison, who had a son Samuel, born in 1807. From this son the Jackson County Shinns originate. The question to determine is who was his father, Samuel?

&nbsp

1. He could not have been Samuel, son of Isaac and Agnes (Drake) Shinn, on Simpson's Creek, for although Isaac had a son Samuel, he was born in 1802, and could not have been the father of a Samuel born in 1807; and even though the time were sufficient, he did not go to Jackson County, but to Ohio.

2. He could not have been a son of Samuel, son of Benjamin, for the reason that we have his Bible record to exclude the hypothesis.

3. He could have been a son of Samuel, son of Clement, born 1793, but it is highly improbable; and, then, the Bible record of Samuel, son of Clement, is that he died unmarried.

The only avenue of escape is that he was a son of Samuel, who married Ann, otherwise called "Old Samuel Shinn, of Simpson's Creek." There were probably other children than the ones herein deduced, but I have not found them.

Children of Samuel and Ann Shinn.

1. Samuel Shinn, who married and moved to Jackson County, Va., and became the head of that family.

"Samuel Shinn, Jr. 1737- aft 1804, only child of Samuel Shinn (Sr.) and second marriage (Provided Gaskill was born in Burlington Co., NJ and probably died in Tennessee.

There are indications that he grew up at Evesham, after 1743 probably living with his elder half-brother, Thomas Shinn, who was married that year and resided in Evesham. It is possible that he was bred to the miller's trade because the Shinns of Evesham traditionally followed that calling. Both he and his brother Thomas were nominal Quakers, but neither seems to have been a very zealous adherent to that faith. In 1762 (the year following his father's death in NC) Samuel Jr. transferred his membership from the Meeting at Evesham to Hopewell Monthly Meeting, in the Opequon setlement in Frederick co., VA. Hopewell was the chief of a number of Quaker Meetings in Northern VA, and one of the preparative under its supervision was at Crooked Run in Safford County, where young Samuel Shinn met his future wife. On 5 Jul, 1765, he was married at Crooke
d Run to Anna...., by a priest, and was promptly disowned by the Quakers. They probably resided for some years in Frederick County, from which they migrated to Surry County, North Carolina, and settled in North Deep Creek several miles north of the present town of Yadkinville in what is now Yadkin County. Sometime in the 1780s, probably about 1786-88, their elder son, Levi Shinn, (born about 1765; died 1837) went to Wilkes County, lying west of Surry, and purchased from one Bronson a tract of 203 acres on Hunting Creek; about 1789 Samuel removed his family to this place, and Levi made the title over to his father. (Wilkes County deed, 24 Apr 1789) The two sons, Levi and John, subsequently returned to Surry County, but Samuel Shinn continued to reside in Wilkes until 1804. In October of that year he sold his Hunting Creek plantation to Francis Barnard for the considerable sum of 200 pounds, and with his remaining family, (probably his wife and two unmarried daughters), migrated to Tennessee. The price for which he sold his Wilkes plantation, a large one for the acreage and intrinsic value of the land, suggests that he may have owned and operated a mill there. At least four o f his daughters seem to have married while the family was resident in Wilkes County, among them being Rebecca Shinn, probably born abt 1772, married about 1791/93 to John Standley (c. 1768-1852) and resided on Hunting Creek in Wilkes County, NC, until 1819, when they removed to Carroll County, Missouri, where she died between 1837 and 1851."
