This profile may have a duplicate. They have not been merged because of concerns that some information they have in common is actually an indicator that two unique identities have been combined. I am asking for help solving this dilemma first before assumptions take over and compound the problem.
This profile, Moses Shinn 1779-1871 (2Z98-CPG) may or may not have a duplicate. Among his attached sources is a marriage; Moses Shinn and Sarah Coil, 11 Apr 1799; citing Harrison, West Virginia. Eight copies of that marriage record, some with the variation of "Cail" for "Coil," is the only source for the profile of Moses wife, Sarah Kyle (LZP2-RY7) Birth 16 Jul 1784 Harrison Co.,West Virginia Death 24 March 1872 Hancock Township, Hancock, Illinois. The majority of other sources attached are marriages of children. The burial source pretty much parrots the asserted information and relationships on the FS profile, without providing adequate or relevant sources. Sarah Lyle has no proving sources for her parents.
Moses Shinn (G9L6-PPL) Birth about 1779 Harrison, Virginia. The information used to create the possibly duplicate profile was taken from "The Descendants of Nicholas Cain" 1736-1986 by Cain & Evans, which unfortunately is only a marriage date of 15 Jan 1799 in Virginia to Sarah (Sally) Cain, daughter of Daniel Cain and Susannah Custer. There is no further information for Moses and Sarah in the book. Limited information seems to always attract well-meaning contributions without proper source support. That is why caution needs to be used and only information from sources used for profile improvements. It is impossible to tell where the authors got their information or whether there are any proving sources to support it, so the marriage must be considered unproven as far as the book reference is concerned.
It seems that both couples have potential for building a fictional profile from just one source which is difficult to ascertain relevance. Did the book authors know of the the 1799 marriage record and accept the name(s) Cail/Coil as misspellings of Cain? Did the descendant contributors of the FS Moses Shinn and Sarah Kyle profiles interpret the Cail/Coil spellings as corruptions of the name Kyle? One large question is why are there no census records for Moses and Sarah, or other records besides the marriages? The photograph of Moses is compelling evidence that he existed, but we need to be cautious regarding the identity information and relationships asserted, which may or may not be proven.
