Biography

Elwyn Manlius Shinn was born on 27 December 1911 in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, USA, son of Manlius Joseph Shinn and Lillias Mae (Walter) Shinn.[1] He was living with his parents and siblings in Cabarrus County through 1930.[2][3]

Elwyn and Doris Lillian Kidwell were married in September 1936, possibly in Washington, District of Columbia[4] They remained in Washington through at least 1940, living at 3014 Cambridge Place where they rented for $35 per month from John J Clese of the same address. Their first child, a daughter, had been born about 1938. Elwyn was working as a Taxi Driver with a privately owned vehicle.[5]

By October 1941, when Elwyn registered for the Draft, he had changed jobs and residence. He was now working for International Business Machines. He and Doris (and presumably their daughter) were living at 1934 35th Street, N. W., Washington, D.C.[6] He was selected for the Army and signed his enlistment papers on 13 March 1944 at Fort George G Meade, Maryland. Those papers include the notation that he was born in North Carolina, was married, and was working as a foreman.[7] In July 1944, he was diagnosed with deafness from prior to enlistment.[8] He was discharged on 6 May 1946.[9]

When his father died in 1960, he was living in Silver Springs, Maryland,[10] and in Belts, Maryland in 1974 when his brother Howard died.[11]

Elwyn may have died on 27 July 1978 in Maryland aged 66.[12]
