Stirling Davis Shipley was born in 1820 in McMinn County, Tennessee. His parents were Uriah Hart Shipley and Mary Anne Davis.
Stirling was a clergyman for the Evangelical Methodist church, as was his father Uriah Shipley.[1]
Stirling married Lourana Tamsey (Buttram) Shipley (1825-1860) on 27 August 1850 in McMinn County, Tennessee.[2][3] They had three children:
In May 1860, his wife Lourana died.
In summer 1860, Stirling was living with his three young children in Douglas County, Missouri.[1] On 12 September 1860, Stirling married Charlotte Hubbard in Ozark County, Missouri.[5]
In 1862, Stirling enlist in the Confederate army.
Stirling died in December 1879. He is buried at County Line Cemetery in Baxter County, Arkansas.

Sterling Davis Shipley was the 1st child born to Uriah and Anne Davis Shipley, 1831. In 1851 Sterling is living in Greene County Arkansas, but by 1860 he is living in Douglas County, Missouri. He is listed as a clergy on the census. He married Lurana Tansey Buttram September 1, 1850 in McMinn County, Tennessee. They had 3 children, Calvin Ember Shipley born 1851, Charles Shipley and Mary A. Shipley born 1859. His 1st wife Lurana Buttram died in May of 1860, and by September of 1860 , he was married the 2nd time to Charlotte Hubbard. In 1857 Sterling bought 40 acres of land from the United States Goverment for the sum of 50 dollars. This was on Spring Creek, in Douglas County, Missouri. On February 15, 1862, Sterling enlisted in the Confederate Army. He was listed as a wagon master and Clergy. His son Sterling Price Shipley was only 13 days old when he enlisted. Sterling and Charlotte had 3 children, they are Sterling Price born 1862, Tomlan(molly)born 1865, and Sharlotta Ella born 1870. Sterling Shipleys confederate papers say that he was in 4th Missouri Inf. Vols. listed as a private, Company C under a Capt. Hays. Enlisted Febrary 15, 1862, Ozark County, Missouri. Engaged in battles at South Fork, Farmington, Iuka, Detailed as Carpenter. He died in 1879 and his estate was valued at 200 dollars.
