Name: Wyatt SHIPP Residence: Savonburg, Allen Co., KS Source: Local newspaper, not cited. Year 1921. Content: “Wyatt SHIPP, was born near Hamonsville, Hart county, Kentucky, on the 8th day of October, 1844, and died at his home in Savonburg, Kansas, at 1:30 p.m., July 6th, 1921, age 76 years, 8 months and 28 days, being the last of a family of 14 children. He had been in failing health for a number of years and confined to his home for the greater part of the past two years, and for the past six weeks confined to his bed, and during this time, one of his two daughters was constantly at his bedside, dividing their time at their homes. From his Kentucky home, he came to Kansas in the year 1867, settling near the town of Pawnee, and was one of those hardy souls who braved the pioneer days. On July 15, 1880, he was united in marriage to Emma J. GRIFFITH, who remains to mourn his loss. To this union were born four children, three of whom survive; two daughters, Mrs. Addie SIMMONS and Mrs. Mary WITTSELL, of Neosho county, Kansas, and, a son Cleveland, who has not been heard from but once since he landed in the U.S. after the World War. A daughter, Nancy, died in infancy. Mr. SHIPP is also survived by four grandchildren. The deceased was an honored member of the A.F.& A.M. lodge for nearly 50 years, taking his master’s degree at Rising Sun Lodge No. 8 at Ft. Scott, Kansas, on September 22, 1871, transferring his membership to Virginia Lodge No. 315, Savonburg on May 4, 1895, of which lodge he was a charter member. Mr. & Mrs. SHIPP took up their home in Savonburg, December 1, 1892 where they have since had continuous residence. Mr. SHIPP was of an unassuming manner and quiet demeanor, always pleasant to meet. An upright citizen, a loving father. His death will be sincerely mourned. The funeral services were held on Thursday at 3 o’clock at the home. They were conducted by Rev. C.V. HUGHS of the M.E. church, a close friend of Mr. SHIPP. After the services the remains were laid to rest in the cemetery one mile south of town. At the open grave Masons held their services, which was very sacred and soothing to the bereaved ones. A large crowd of Masons and friends were in attendance at the funeral.” Comments: Wyatt was the son of Richard SHIPP & Sarah “Sally” MARDIS of Green Co., KY. The SHIPP family traces their lineage to Josiah SHIPP & Elizabeth BROOKES of Virginia.
