Notes written by Kathleen Ann Long Shipton in Joe Ingrams' book.
Frederick Henry Long Shipton was the son of a clergeyman and one of seven children. The eldest Ernest died a bachelor. The eldest daughter Henrietta and the second Elizabeth died spinsters. All lived till their 70's. Another daughter Jane died in her 20's of smallpox. Thomas had three children and William three.
Frederick Henry told the writer (his daughter) that traditionally the family came from Spitalfields where they were silk throwsters. They then went to Devonshire and built a silk factory. The head of the family then had a love affair with one of the hands & she burnt down the factory. As I remember it the factory was said to have been rebuilt upon which she burnt it down again. in the meantime, his son-in-law, who had worked for him, went to America to set up a silk weaving factory there, sending for his wife, her mother and sisters to come out to him. They set sail but the boat sank with all on board. I understood them to be Frederick's grand or great grandparents. Frederick's father died when he was a child. He was born in Somerset, I think, in Ilchester. His mother died when he was about 20/21.
Notes by John Long Shipton:-
Frederick Henry Long Shipton also joined the BTC/CTC about the same time as his brothers Ernest and William. He was less active in it than his brothers but he advertised his 46" Singer 'Special Challenge' for sale 'in good going order, tyres in splended condition' for the sum of £4 in the December 1882 issue of the BTC Monthly Gazette.
He was a member of Croydon Rifle Club and won Cups and Spoons for his shooting.
Search as I may I am unable to discover any evidence that the family came from Spitalfields or that they had a silk factory in Devonshire. Certainly Henry Shipton was born in Bethnal Green in 1823 but this was an unusual circumstance and the possible reason for Henry's mother, Catherine, being there are outlined above in the notes for Catherine Shipton, nee Timmis.
