DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Richard by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Richard:

Hi All of you Ever-So-Distant Cousins!

Buried among these comments is Pattie's comment that THIS Richard (married to Elizabeth Adkins) was NOT the son of Richard II (married to "Elizabeth") but was the son of William Shockley. Pattie cited the Niese/Gates authoritative treatise on the Shockley-Adkins genealogy as support. According to the Niese/Gates treatise, Richard "The Emigrant" Shockley had four sons (one of whom is Richard II) and all but one of those four sons each had a son named Richard. That is, Richard "The Emigrant" Shockley had three grandsons with the name Richard Shockley. Definitely easy to confuse these Richards!

What I don't see in this thread of some 25 comments is anyone's response to Pattie's comment about the correct(?) parentage for Richard-married-to-Elizabeth-Adkins. If I missed it, maybe someone could cut and paste it again here or in an email to me at [email address removed] Otherwise, let's see if we can get this one straightened out (and Find-a-Grave is not an authoritative cite or site for parentage! LOL!). Thanks!

First: I don't think that this Richard married Elizabeth Adkins. Please see the DAR records for Isaiah Shockley, son of Richard Shockley-51 and Elizabeth Shockley Richard is honored for his Patriotic Service by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, as DAR Ancestor #A212755. <ref> https://services.dar.org/public/dar_research/search_adb/?action=full&p_id=A212755 </ref> Descendants of Isaiah and his wife, Ruth, are eligible for membership in the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution. <ref> National Number 92149 </ref>

Second: The "note" you may be looking for (below) says that THIS Richard, Richard Shockley III, son of Richard Shockley II and Elizabeth Paynter, was born in Cedar Creek Hundred, Sussex County, Delaware. He married REBECCA HUDSON. They had one child, a son named Curtis, born 21 Jan 1758 in Sussex County, Delaware and his will was drawn in 1831. Third: rather than remove someone else's notes on Shockley-51, I did add some information for the Richard Shockley that lived in Delaware -- just over the state line from Maryland. jg

Isaiah Josiah Shockley was not his son - he was given the name of his slave owner. There is a document showing he was on a slave register. Richard and Elizabeth Shockley were listed as Isaiah's parent on his death certificate, which created the mistake. Based on his name (compare to alleged siblings), Isaiah was most likely an African-American slave, married to an Irish slave, Ruth Ann Young. Their son, Isaac Samuel Shockley was married to Arminda Dorcus Hoodenpyle, a first-born American immigrant from the Netherlands. The British owned the Netherlands at the time, so she was likely a slave. The British brought Irish slaves into Virginia and North Carolina, and probably Dutch slaves. The British force-bred African-American male slaves with female Irish, and probably female Dutch slaves because mulatto slaves sold for more money. One of their thirteen children, Thomas Nathaniel Shockley has a record showing "former British slave." He then married a woman with family from Baltimore.

Isaiah Josiah needs to be removed from the list of children.

The 1850 Schedule? The names shown are of the Slave Holder, not the Enslaved person. He is shown with three enslaved people in his household. A female aged 38 years, a male aged 11 years and a male aged 5 years. This schedule can be found here- https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-6XSQ-2FG?cc=1420440&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AHRWF-9T6Z

In the 1850 US Census, Isaiah is listed with his wife Ruth and that census can be found here- https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-66TS-1CY?i=18&cc=1401638&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AMC6S-N2M

If Isaiah were an enslaved person then he wasn't by 1850 as he appears in the regular 1850 US Census. His wife was also not enslaved by 1850. I can't prove his middle name right now but it appears that even this profile (for his father) is using a middle name (Esau) that doesn't appear in any documents. I'd suspect that the same person that has applied a middle name to the father probably added one to the son as well despite no source for doing so.

I've been cleaning up the Adkins family on WikiTree and since a Richard Shockley married an Adkins I was trying to help clean up the Richard's.

Isaiah does have a profile on WikiTree here- https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Shockley-81 but the profile look like a GEDcom import. (That's why the statements look so sloppy). I'm pretty sure the Ancestry.com sources at the bottom will no longer link to the supporting documents.

I'll make sure as I am going through sourcing the two Richard's (and separating out which records belong to who) that I'll double check the records on Isaiah as well.

Isaiah Josiah lived from 1776 to 1867, so most of his life was prior to 1850, and the Slave Schedule was truly when he was an adult and being set free.

His grandon, Thomas Nathaniel, 1832 to 1898, was shown on "Former British Colonial Dependencies, Slaves Registers, 1813-1834" He was a baby, so he was in no way a slave owner.

There may be more than one Isaiah in the records. I can prove that the son of Richard was not enslaved as early as 1805 when he appears in the 1805 Grainger, Tennessee tax records that were enumerated by Mr. John Lea, Sherriff. While the list is for 1805, it was written up on 4 Aug 1804.

Sorry, but I didn't mention Isaiah's grandson as a slave holder, it was Isaiah that owned the enslaved people in 1850. Thomas Nathaniel doesn't seem to have a profile on WikiTree yet.

I did an internet search and came across an article from Family Tree Magazine (https://www.familytreemagazine.com/premium/unlocking-slaverys-legacy/) that contains a photo of Isaiah Shockley down towards the bottom of the article. It identifies everyone in the photo and could possibly be of the family you are talking about? The photo was taken about 1890's and in the photo are Amanda (Sparkman) Shockley, her sister Myra Lou (Sparkman) Cummings and Isaiah with three children. That Isaiah has his own profile on WikiTree but his parents aren't shown. There seems to be a bit more detail on Amanda's profile.

The "Former British Colonial Dependencies, Slaves Registers, 1813-1834" are on Ancestry but when I search for the surname of Shockley I get only 12 results with the surname of Shickle and Sheckle all from Jamaica. I tried to search using the surname of Nathaniel as well but got no hits. Do you know what page number Thomas Nathaniel appears on?

I did find a land record on 11 Dec 1824, Isaiah bought 50 acres of land in Tennessee. It was surveyed on 16 Sep 1826.

Source:

I also saw quite a few land deeds from the early 1800's in Tennessee for Isaiah but I'd need to double check them to see if they were for him or his son of the same name.

I doubt we're talking about a different Isaiah Josiah Shockley, with a son Isaac Samuel. Thomas Nathaniel is his grandson, listed as a former British slave. I doubt he could be a former slave and his grandfather not be one. Isaac was married to Arminda Dorcus Hoodenpyle, and she was Thomas' mother. My grandmother was a Shockley, so I followed the line straight up.

If you don't mind me asking, where are you seeing the tree you are looking at? There is no Isaac Samuel or Thomas Nathaniel here on WikiTree so that suggests to me that you are looking somewhere else. If I know what your source is I can better figure out what information is not correct as I untangle this family.

There is a ton of information in Volume 1 of the book I posted as a reply but here is a direct page that would be of interest- (https://www.familysearch.org/library/books/records/item/252377-richard-shockley-and-elizabeth-adkins-their-ancestors-and-descendants-vol-1?viewer=1&offset=4#page=354&viewer=picture&o=info&n=0&q=)

Richard Shockley III, son of Richard Shockley II and Elizabeth Paynter, was born in Cedar Creek Hundred, Sussex County, Delaware. He married REBECCA HUDSON. They had one child, a son named Curtis, born 21 Jan 1758 in Sussex County, Delaware and his will was drawn in 1831.

Of the sources shown above:

1. Hard to know which entry in this database the entry refers to. Here are the possibilities:

a. Volume 40, Number 1, page 21: Reference to Amos Worrell and his Bounty Land Warrant (BLW) Application in which several Shockley's are mentioned. The father Shockley is not given a first name but his three children are listed as William, Meredith and Isaiah. Does not appear to be for this Richard, it appears to apply to this Richard.

b. Volume 25, Number 1, page 24: References a list of men to survey a road from the mouth of Snow Creek to Hickeys Road but this is known to be the other Richard who married an Adkins and lived in Virginia.

2. Link only talks about Lord Dunmore, not about those that served with him. The Draper Manuscripts are where we get the list of participants in Lord Dunmore's War, specifically the Battle of Point Pleasant, but Richard is not listed with the participants. (See the book "Documentary history of Dunmore's war, 1774")

3. No longer links to Dunmore. Link goes to the home page of Colonial Williamsburg.

4. Find a Grave is conflated and has mixed the two different Richard's as this profile has done.

5. Source #S474, link circles back to this page. Family tree that it referenced is unknown so sources on that tree can not be verified.

6. Census reports, family records. This is not specific enough to follow.

7. Link to William Owen goes to an error 404 page. It appears this was a genealogy at some time?

The only Richard Shockley shown as a revolutionary war soldier on Fold3.com is one that enlisted in Massachusetts. He appeared on a list of Rebel prisoners taken at Quebec on 31 Dec 1775 and returned on 27 Jul 1776. He was from Massachusetts Bay and only 22 years old.

I hope some of this helps to get the two men untangled.

Still no proof of the middle name of Esau. But this Richard, the son of Richard and Elizabeth Paynter stayed in Maryland. He appears on the 1790 US Census for Worcester, Maryland- (2nd column, 11th down- Richd Shockly Senr). According to this census it is just him and 6 slaves in the household.

"United States Census, 1790," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GYY8-3S88?cc=1803959&wc=3XTM-B83%3A1584070902%2C1584070723%2C1584070607 : 14 May 2015), Maryland > Worcester > Not Stated > image 5 of 10; citing NARA microfilm publication M637, (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.).

I have photos that show the docs and the middle names. I don't see anywhere to attach.

Shockley-51 and Shockley-35 are not ready to be merged because: Appears to be the same person but parents are different

- documentation needed to determine which are correct. Wife the same and children appear to be correct. Birth and death dates slightly different also.

Shockley-51 and Shockley-35 appear to represent the same person because: I have completed further research and I have concluded that these represent the same person. However, I do not believe his middle name is Esau. In my research there is a Richard Shockley, son of William Shockley who married Elizabeth Adkins. There is also an Esau Shockley who married Elizabeth Farmer, but there is no Richard Esau Shockley in any of the records I could find. Thank You, Jeanette

Shockley-51 and Shockley-35 do not represent the same person because: The birth dates are not the same. The book Richard Shockley and Elizabeth Adkins, Their ancestors and Descendants Volumes 1 and 2 by Beverly J Neises and James H Gates document that William Shockley son of Richard Shockley and Ann Boyden m. Sarah and their son Richard Shockley m. Elizabeth Adkins daughter of William Atkinson and Lydia Owen. Therefore the information is correct.

Richard Shockley and Ann Boydon also had a son named Richard who married Elizabeth Paynter. Records have not supported a number designation to those named Richard, it seems that the number designation may have come from those researching the Shockley family in order to tell one Richard Shockley from another. These two men have different dates of birth and I have not found any record that supports Richard's middle name is Esau. Therefore I must reject this merge. Jeanette
