Biography

Levi/Levy Shockley was born circa 1740, in Colonial Virginia, prior to the establishment of modern day county lines. Lunenburg County is proudly and historically known as the “Mother of Counties.” After being formed from Brunswick on May 1, 1746, Lunenburg went on to provide territory for the formation of nine other counties after 1753-Charlotte, Partick and Henry-hence, the title, “Mother of Counties.” Halifax was formed in 1752 from Lunenburg County, and included the present counties of Pittsylvania, Henry, Franklin, and Patrick.

Levi is the eldest son of James Shockley and Margaret Elizabeth Ashton and is named in the Will of his father. [1]

"Levy Shockley" is found on the List of Tithables Taken by George Jefferson in Pittsylvania County and Cambden Parish for the year 1767. [2]

Researchers Notes

David Shockley had legal transactions with the Boltons in 1786 Franklin county, Virginia. David married Susanna Bolton, daughter of Thomas Bolton and Jemima Hammock. Susanna was the niece of Rebecca Bolton, who married his brother, Levi Shockley. These families were intertwined with the families of Jarred Branson Senior and are part of the Branson DNA Project: http://bransoncook.systemaxonline.com/narratives/jared_branson/jared1.htm

"Lery Shockely" is found on the United States Census of 1820, living in Washington county, Kentucky, formed in 1792. [3]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Levi by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Levi:

Levi Shockley and Rebecca Bolton

Rebecca Bolton b abt 1760 was a sister of my ancestor Matthew Bolton b1763, Elizabeth Bolton b1767 and six other children who were born about 1755-1767. They were the children of Robert Bolton (Jr) b about 1735 and a woman named Mary. It was impossible for them to be the children of Robert Bolton b VA, 1706 and Mary Hubbard b VA, 1711, as posted by thousands at various websites because at least five of these children were born after 1760 and it is well documented that Elizabeth was born 1767 when Mary Hubbard Bolton was fifty-six years old. Medical researchers have proven that it is extremely rare for a woman to get pregnant at the age of fifty, and never have there been five born after reaching the age of fifty.

The following is one of four sales of Pigg River land that Robert Jr purchased in 1769 when the Pigg River was in Pittsylvania Co VA. His nine children were legatees in these land sales;

On 6 OCT 1792/4 the estate of Robert Bolton Jr, who died 1787 sold 120 acres on the Pigg River in Franklin Co VA to James Bolton, brother of the Legatees. They were Levi Schocklee (Rebecca Bolton), Robert Perryman (Ann Bolton), Robert Bolton (3rd), Thomas Bolton, Mathew Bolton, and Benjamin Potter (Elizabeth Bolton). Witnesses were Richard Comener, James Shocklee, and Thomas James.

I have not researched this couple but it appears that this Levi is probably the son of Levi born about 1740. He married Rebecca about 1780 when she was about 20 and if Levi, born 1740 married her it was probably a second marriage. Six of Rebecca's siblings are recorded as being married after 1782. According to the FamilySearch page, which is the only source for this profile, Susannah Shockely, daughter of this family was born in 1772 and cannot be the Susannah Shockley born in 1740's who married Thomas Potter. https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/family/MPXN-4SS

Shockley-309 and Shockley-303 appear to represent the same person because: Hello Shockley cousins! These two profiles are the same person. The only conflicting information is when Levi was born and neither profile lists any source information. I did a brief search to see if I could find anything definitive about Levi's birthdate but only found different family trees and nothing I would call an evidentiary source. If anyone has a definitive source for Levi's DOB, please post it. Otherwise, why not merge these two profiles and list his birthdate as before 1757 until a solid source can be found?
