Bernard "Barney" Lennon was born around 1819 in Ireland and died in 1868 in Buffalo, Erie Co, NY. His occupation is listed as engineer on the 1860 census at Buffalo.
Barney was the grandfather of William J. Donovan, head of the OSS during WWII. Douglas Waller, in his book "Wild Bill Donovan, the Spymaster who Created the OSS and Modern American Espionage", tells us Wild Bill's maternal grandfather [Barney] was a watchman for a grain elevator, that he fell off a wharf and drowned in the Buffalo River, and that his wife had died in an epidemic a year earlier.
The Buffalo "Evening Courier & Republic" of Wednesday evening, July 22, 1868, reported that a verdict of accidental drowning was reached after an inquest held Monday afternoon on the body of Bernard Lennon, who had "drowned in the bay".
Barney's wife was Mary, born around 1822 in Ireland and died around 1867.
The proposed list of their children below is based on the supposition that Bernard and Mary are the couple listed as Barney and Mary "Lincon" on the 1850 census at Buffalo. They're listed as Barney and Mary "Lemon" in 1860.
1. James Lennon, b ca 1839 Ireland 2. Jeremiah Lennon, b ca 1846 NY 3. Sarah Jane Lennon, b ca 1848 NY 4. Mary Ann Lennon, b ca 1849 NY, m Michael Hurley 5. Martha Lennon, b ca 1852 NY, m William Sheehan 6. Elizabeth Lennon, b ca 1854 NY 7. Ann Leticia "Tish" Lennon, b ca 1855 NY, m Timothy Donovan 8. Thomas Edward Lennon, b Feb 1859 NY, m Anna Downey
James and Jeremiah appear in Barney's household in 1850 but not in 1860. Sarah Jane appears in his household in 1860 but not in 1850.
In 1870 the younger children are living with their married sister Mary Ann Hurley; in 1880 they're with sister Martha Sheehan.
See Message 651 of this forum. In that posting I mistakenly typed Thomas instead of Bernard as the name of the drowning victim. LennonThomassonofBernard New York, State Census, 1865 New York, State Census, 1855
