Research Notes
1850, 1860 and 1880 Census state Lovell Short was born in New York, not Tioga County, Pennsylvania. ** Need more sourcing to determine Birth location. His father was in Rhode Island in 1790, so New York may be correct.
Changed unsourced birth location to Tioga County, New York as Tioga County, Pennsylvania did not exist until 1803. Tioga, New York is just across the border from the future Tioga, Pennsylvania. This makes the 1870 Census the only inconsistant census record.
1860 Census looks like he has a 3rd wife Sarah living with him, although no other mention is made on Find a Grave page or other sources. She is not on 1870 census. No Sarah Short was found on FAG in Pennsylvania or New York who died between 1860 and 1870.
Mother of Eleanor and Betsey is uncertain as Thankful would have only been 15 and 17 at their birth. Based on names alone Eleanor is most likely by Eleanor. Betsey is most likely by Thankful named for her mother.
An unknown male child born 1820-1825 appears in the 1830 and 1840 census.
Lovell's parents marked uncertain as there is no primary source indicating this is correct.
Lovell's name changed from Lovel as more all of the
Regarding other nicknames, "Love" from 1850 census may very well be a nickname. "Lowell" from 1860 census appears to be an error made by the enumerator as it does not match other examples of his "ow", "we", "ve" or "ov". "Lowell" from the 1880 census is a transcription error as inspection of the record clearly shows it to be "Lovell" for both Lovell and his grandson.
