Biography

Private George Short Jr served in the United States Civil War.

George Washington Short, Jr. was born the second of six sons and five daughters on June 18, 1811 to George Short and Catherine Monical in Kentucky.[1][2][3]

In 1814, when George was just two years old his family migrated to Washington County, Indiana. They were among the pioneer settlers of that county.[1] George and his family migrated to Howard County, Missouri in 1839.[1] In 1845 George received several patents for land in St. Clair County, Missouri.[4] George owned about 800 acres of land and by 1883 he had given much of it to his children and was living on a farm of about 235 acres.[1]

In 1850 the family is living in St. Clair County, Missouri where they were counted in the U.S. census.[2]

In 1860, Esther's mother Magdeline (Prince) Carleton is living with George, Esther and the family.[5] George is counted in the 1870 and 1880 U.S. census residing at Monegan, St Clair, Missouri. In the 1880 census, George's sister Nancy (Short) McClelland is living in his household. [6][7]

Marriages

George married when he was twenty years old on October 13, 1831 to Esther Carleton in Washington County.[1][8]

Esther died in the fall of 1862[9] and George remarried to Cynthia Ann Reed.[1][10]

Children

George and Esther had eight children[11][2]:

George and Cynthia had two children[11]:

  1. General Alonzo Sherman Short b. 1865
  2. Emma Cynthia b. 1869

Military Service

George was fifty years old in March of 1862 when he enlisted as a private in Company E of the Seventh Missouri Cavalry and served with the Union during the civil war. [12]

He was discharged in 1863 with disability.[13] After he returned home he re-enlisted and served in the home guard until the end of the war.[1]

George filed for his pension on March 29, 1882.[14]

Death

George died on April 7, 1886 in St. Clair, Missouri.[3]

Will

George made his will on March 26, 1878 and it was probated on April 15, 1886 in St. Clair, Missouri.[11]

In the name of God, amen.
I George W Short of the county of St. Clair Missouri being of sound mind and knowing the uncertainty of life do make and publish this my last will and testament as follows:
1st I request and direct that all my funeral expenses and costs of administration on my estate and all of my past debts be first paid out of my personal property.
2nd I give and bequeath to my daughter Nancy C. Short one dollar, to my son Wm L Short one dollar, to my daughter Hannah M Minns one dollar, to my daughter Margaret Jane Lewellen one dollar, to my son Samuel R Short one dollar, to my son David W Short one dollar, to my grandson George F Bean one dollar, to my grandson Alonzo A Bean one dollar, to my granddaughter Esther C Carnaham (?) one dollar, to my granddaughter Mary E Hines one dollar, and to my granddaughter Margaret K Murphy one dollar.
3rd I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Cynthia A Short one third of all my personal property in lieu of her donor interest therein. After the payment of my foregoing bequeaths and out of said one third of my personal property I direct that she support maintain and educate in the common english branches my two children by her. General Alonzo Sherman Short and Emma C Short until said two children respectively arrive at the age of fifteen years.
4th I give and bequeath to my son General Alonzo Sherman Short one third (1/3) of all my personal property after the payments of my debts and expenses of administration.
5th I give and bequeath to my daughter Emma C Short one third of all my personal property after the payments of my debts and costs of administration.
6th I hereby direct that after my death and as soon as convenient all of my personal property shall be inventoried and appraised by three disinterested persons, said appraisers to be appointed and selected by my executors herein after named. said appraisers shall make a full inventory of all my personal property and appraisement thereof and after said appraisement my wife Cynthia A Short shall have the right to select one third in value of my said personal estate or less share 1/3 if she so desires, and the remainder shall be sold at public sale by my Executors and the proceeds divided so that my said wife will receive 1/3 of my personal estate either in kind or money. my son General Alonzo Sherman Short 1/3 in money leaving to my wife the right to select her 1/3 of my personal estate either in property or money or both.
I hereby nominate and appoint my wife Cynthia A Short and Francis C Nesbit Executors of this my last will and testament and I hereby authorize and empower my said executors to sell and public sale and dispose of all my personal property as above directed I hereby revoke all former.
