Biography

Hugh SHORT.

Born ABT 1803. This is based upon records for him in Ireland, which have him living in Belfast (TyroneAntrim). His son John's bio (prob written by John's 3rd wife) has Hugh's birth in Tyrone, PA, but there's no evidence for this. See Boston MA death rec/Town-Vital Rec.Belfast, Antrim, Ireland. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]

1803 According to the History of Peoria IL, in the Bio of Capt John Short. Absolutely no doc. for this has been found. There's a Hugh Short b. abt 1802 in Blairsville, PA, but he stayed in PA and had a documented family. John Short was hiding his Irish birth./Tyrone, Blair, Pennsylvania, USA.

Died 04 OCT 1851. Hugh Short: Born about 1802(49 yrs), in Ireland. White Male. Died 4 Oct 1851 in Boston, MA. Parents: Hugh and Anne. Place of Death: D. I. [Deer Island] Hospital. Event: Departure 1849 According to family stories, Hugh became excited about the Gold Rush in California, and went there overland. He was never again seen by his family, and his sons had no idea how he ended his days. But see the death record below.../From Boston to California.

Occupation: BET 1842 AND 1848. Hugh was a "housewright" (architect). Later, he was demoted to carpenter. This information is taken from the Boston City Directories for the appropriate years. His sons claimed that he was an alcoholic, and was very out-of-control./Boston, MA, USA.

Residence 1852 This, like the record below it, is not likely to refer to our ancestor. The information recorded in this particular 1852 CA State census record is very sparse./Yuba, California, United States. [17]

1860 This is not likely to be our ancestor, but it's the right name at about the right time in the right place, so I'm saving it here, just in case...../Diamond Springs, El Dorado, California. [18]

Hospital (second initial is conjecture, but appears on other pages). Parents: Hugh Short and Anne. Occupation of deceased: Carpenter. Cause of Death: Chronic Diahrrea. Place of interment: Low Island (??). Informant: __________________ This record, along with the corresponding MA Death Record (also attached) is particularly intriguing, because the family story is that this Hugh Short went West to California at the time of the 1849 Gold Rush and was never seen again. Of course he may well have gone West in 1849 and returned, and still never have seen his sons again, because we know that he was estranged from them. (This would also explain his absence from the 1850 US Federal Census.) By 1851 both of his sons were living elsewhere: John Short may have been in the Chicago, IL area, and Hugh N. Short was married to Barbara Richardson and lived in Maine with her and her extended family.

In the middle of the 19th century, Deer Island was the landing point for thousands of refugees from the Irish Potato Famine, many sick and poverty-stricken. In 1847, a hospital was established to treat incoming immigrants, and during the following two years approximately 4,800 men, women, and children were admitted. Many recovered and went on to new lives, but more than 800 died. In 1850, an almshouse was built to house paupers. Opened in 1853, It was administered by the City of Boston.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Hugh by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Hugh:
