Biography

Joseph Shriver was born January 11, 1806 in Frederick County, Maryland, the son of Andrew Shriver and Elizabeth Schultz Shriver.[1][2]

Joseph was married to Henrietta Jane Causten on December 3, 1834, in Washington, D.C., which was noted in the United States Telegraph on December 8, 1834.

MARRIED

"On Thursday evening last, by the Rev. Mr. Sargent, JOSEPH SHRIVER, of Cumberland, Md., to HENRIETTA J., oldest daughter of J.H. Causten, Esq. of this city."

Shriver died on January 1, 1886, in Cumberland. An obituary was published in the Westminster Democrat-Advocate on January 9, 1886.

Death of a Former Carroll Countian

A dispatch from Cumberland, Md., January 1, says: "Mr. Joseph Shriver, a prominent and wealthy citizen of Cumberland and president of the First National Bank, died here this morning in his eightieth year. He enjoyed excellent health until a few months ago, when he began to fail rapidly. He was the son of Andrew Shriver and was born at Union Mills, Carroll county, Md. He was educated as a civil engineer, and was engaged with his brother James on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal and afterward on the National road from Wheeling to t. Louis.

In 1834 he located in Cumberland as cashier of the Cumberland Bank of Allegany, which became First National Bank in 1864. He had been president of the First National from the time it was chartered until his death. His wife died some years ago, and he leaves five grown children, one of whom is Robert Shriver, a member of the Allegany school board.[3]

1850 - United States Census - In the 1850 federal census, Joseph Shriver, 44, is living in Cumberland, Allegany, Maryland, and is working as a cashier in the banking and credit industry. Enumerated with him are his wife, Henrietta, 38, and children, Charles, 15; Robert, 13; Eliza, 11; Henry, 9; Mary, 5; Henrietta, 3; and Alice, 1. Also in the household are Rose Amelia, 17; Catharine Amelia, 19 and Catherine McCoskey, 18.[4]

1870 - United States Census - In the 1870 census,, Joseph Shriver, 64, is listed as the head of household and a banker in District 6, Allegany, Maryland. Also enumerated in the household are his children, Robert Shriver, 33, a bank clerk; Mary Shriver, 3; Henrietta Shriver, 21; and Alice Shriver, 19. Also enumerated are domestics Kate Wellington, 23, Sophy Zohner, 25 and Mary Coston, 18.[5]
