Son of Theodore and Isabelle (Slusher) Shufelt. Drowned crossing the Missouri River on horseback.

From The Searchlight, Culbertson, MT, 15 July 1910 Drowned in Missouri River

While trying to ford the Missouri river last Saturday forenoon, Charlie Shufelt, a well-known young man of this vicinity, lost his life in the Missouri river. Word was brought to Glasgow Tuesday night of the finding of the body and Coroner Peterson went out Wednesday and brought the body into town for burial.

It is reported that ranchers along the Missouri quite frequently at this time of the year ford the river on horseback instead of ferrying across, and at this point he had crossed in the same manner only a day or two before, and only had to swim his horse twenty feet. But this time the horse he was riding stepped off into a hole and plunged out of sight and as the animal went down, the horse he was leading stopped. Shufelt too went down with the horse he was riding but succeeded in getting free from it, and still holding to the lead rope of the trail horse he started to swim to shore but his clothing and treacherous undertow, characteristic of the Missouri, was more than he could hold up against and he soon disappeared before the eyes of his wife who stood on shore out of his reach and totally powerless to render any assistance.

From the time of the accident until the body was found, neighbors kept constant watch from the shore and Monday morning, two days afterward, it came to the surface and was recovered from the river by men in a rowboat. Coroner C.E. Peterson on being notified, went to the scene of the accident Tuesday and brought the body into town Wednesday. It was late in the day when they reached town and as the body was in a badly decomposed condition, it was taken directly to the cemetery and buried about 8 o'clock, Rev. J.C. Walker of the M.E. church conducting a short funeral service at the grave.

Charlie Shufelt was one of the pioneer young men of this country, having grown to manhood in this vicinity, and is a brother of Jack, Frank, Burt and Ray (correction - Roy) and son of Bert (correction - Theo) and Mrs. Theo Shufelt, who now reside in Missouri. He was married about a year ago to a daughter of Mack Hunter, of Galpin, and leaves a wife and baby.--Valley County News
