Research Notes

Grandfather of Charles Ross Shultz: Charles Ross Shultz, A Genealogy of the Descendants of Michael Shultz. Privately published, 1943. In possession of Kathy Patterson.

John Walter was b. Nov. 2, 1779; d. Aug. 20, 1844. Susannah Lehmer was b. ar. 14, 1785; d. Sept. 14, 1869. She was the daughter of Jacob and Catherine Lehmer, Jacob being b. in 1758, and d. Dec. 4, 1836, while Catherine was b. in 1764, and d. Dec. 11, 1838. Jacob Lehmer was a veteran of the Revolutionary war, being a member of the 6th Pennsylvania Reg. under Col. Robert Magaw, and in Captain Jacob Mauser's (Moser) Company. He was mustered Aug. 9, 1777, having enlisted May 5, 1777. (Vol. 3, p. 115, 5th Series, Pa. Archives). John and Susannah Walter, as well as Jacob and Catherine Lehmer, are buried in Samuel's cemetery. John Walter was the son of Michael and Catherine (Ankeny) Walter; Michael was a German immigrant who came to America in 1764; and was among the earliest settlers in Somerset County. He d. in 1785 and is buried in the family plot on the Walter farm, about three miles south of Somerset Borough.

"Personal data is found on the tomb stones, giving dates, but it cannot be completely deciphered, due to the effect of weathering and the fact that it is in German. [This was 70 years ago! KP] His wife was Catherine, a daughter of Dewalt Angena (Ankeny), who came to America in 1746, at the age of 23. His family was of French Huguenot origin, having been driven out of France by the persecutions there, and lived for some time in the Palatinate. In America, he prospered and left a large fortune (for that period), and his will is given in the Journal of American History, vol. 2, p. 661-2. Several of his sons fought in the Revolution, - two as Captains and one as a Lieutenant. They were early settlers of Somerset, and Peter [who? Shultz again? KP] laid out the south portion of the town of Somerset. The Walter family was also prominent in Somerset County history, and from it has come many officials and business men.

"Peter Shultz, together with his brother John and sister Barbara, was confirmed in Gideon's Church, Milford Township in 1824. His name is on the tax list first in 1829, single, and again in 1832, as a 'joiner' (carpenter) and taxed on 148 acres. He later lived on his father-in-law's farm, and upon the death of the latter, he bought it and lived there throughout his life. There his large family of thirteen children was born, and all but one raised to maturity.
