The Biography of Thomas Albert Shultz Son of George Washington Shultz and Sarah Marie Hunter by Francis D. Motschman, Sr.
Thomas Albert Shultz was the fourth and last child born to George W. and Sarah Marie Shultz. Thomas, or Albert, as he generally wished to be called as he got older, was born on Mon., September 14, 1874 there on the farm near Dawn or Ansonia as it is now called. Just as George was lenient with the girls he was a bullying taskmaster with the boys. Albert could see from the way George was with his brother, Sherman, that life was not going to be easy, so he just dug in and did his best. Growing up in this manner with a father who was more interested in having his son's work rather than wasting time on book learning, he learned to work hard. He found that most people did not want to dig their own ditches, and ditches had to be dug, so he would be a ditch digger. There was always plenty of work and not a tremendous amount of competition. He, at some time in the future, started to call himself a "Ditch Contractor", because he thought it sounded classier.
When Albert was 22 years old he married a nice young girl by the name of Rosa Bell Bruner, the daughter of John Bruner and Mary Fry. Rosa, nineteen years old was born on Wed., December 12, 1877 in Darke County, Ohio. Through the years they always enjoyed visiting with or being visited by his brother Sherman and his wife Lillie. Sherman was not like Albert. Instead of "digging in", as Albert had done, Sherman "took off", joining a circus where he learned many fascinating things, among which, was playing the bones or spoons, juggling, tightrope walking, playing the jewsharp, playing the fiddle and throwing his voice. He was an entertainer at all times.
Albert and Rosa started another line of Shultz's with nine children, the first seven were girls and the last two were boys:
