Biography

Daniel de la Shumate was born about 1712 in Martinique or England. Daniel was the son of Jean de la Chaumette and Mrs. Elizabeth Bourgeois Bouvet.[1]

Daniel was married first to Elizabeth Taliaferro.

Daniel's second marriage was to Mary Elizabeth Hoffman, on the 1st of February, 1757, in Frederick County, Maryland[2].

Daniel and his wife Mary sold 100 acres of land in Fauquier county, Virginia to John de la Shumate on the 22nd of October 1770. The deed reads in part: "This Indenture made this 22'd day of October and in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy Between Daniel de la Shumate and Mary his wife of Prince William County and Colony of Virginia of the one part and John de la Shumate of Fauquier of the other part Witnesseth that the said Daniel de la Shumate for and in consideration of thirty pounds good and lawful money of Virginia to him in hand paid by the said John de la Shumate the receipt whereof he doth hereby acknowledge . . . confirm and deliver unto the said John de la Shumate his heirs &c forever a certain piece or parcel of land containing one hundred acres be the same more or less situate lying and being in Fauquier county adjoining to the land of John Kerr, Nicholas George, John Neilson, and the above said John de la Shumate which said hundred acres was given to the said Daniel de la Shumate by his Father, John de la Shumate the said land was taken up by William Allen then Stafford County & conveyed by the said Allen to the said John de la Shumate father to the said Daniel de la Shumate together with all houses trees woods water and water courses and all appurtenances there unto . . . In Witness whereof the parties to this Indenture have set their hands and seals the day and year above written signed sealed and delivered in presence of W. Blackwell [signed] Daniel his X mark Dela Shumate Mary her X mark Dela Shumate Received of and from the within named John de la Shumate the with in consideration money and acknowledged my self there with fully satisfied and paid for the within mentioned lands given under my hand this 22'd day of October 1770. [signed] Daniel his X mark de la Shumate . . ."[3]

Daniel married about 1770, as his third wife, Tabitha Dodson, daughter of Abraham and Barbary Dodson. No marriage record has been located but it is believed they married in Fauquier county, Virginia.

Daniel died about 1784 in Fauquier county, Virginia.

The court of Fauquier county, Virginia on the 22nd day of August, 1785, ordered that the inventory and appraisment of Daniel's estate be recorded. The Court minutes read as follows: "An Inventory and Appraisment of the estate of Daniel Shumate dec'd was returned an ordered to be recorded. . ."[4]

Inventory

  • Inventory of Daniel de la Shumate made in October 1784 -
Negro Thomas, 75 pounds, Bess, 5 pounds, four head of horses, eight head of cattle, two sows and 25 pigs, seven sheep, three beds and furniture and 12 ticks of feathers, two chests, ten chairs, a gun, two tables, a parcel of old pewter, plates, dishes and spoons, a pair of flat irons, ploughs, axes and hoes, two wheels, a loom, tubs, pails and riggins, frying pan and dutch oven, saddles and bridles, a pair of wedges, firetongs, knives and forks, butter pot, three books. Total amount: 173 pounds, 13 shillings, 9 pence. Thomas Helm, William Conway and John Kerr were the appraisers.

Slaves

Daniel Shumate was a slave owner, certainly through his wife's inheritance, but also possibly on his own.

  • Prior to his marriage to Tabitha Dodson, Tabitha had been bequeathed a male slave named Adam in the 1768 will of her father Abraham Dodson.[5] It is unclear if Adam was eventually transferred to Tabitha, or was transferred to another family member or died. Adam is not mentioned in the 1784 will documents of Daniel Shumate or the 1803 will documents of Tabitha (Dodson) Shumate.[6]
  • Bess, who was also transferred many times within the Dodson family, including from Thomas Dodson Sr to his son Abraham to his wife Barbara, to their daughter Tabitha and therefore to her husband Daniel Shumate. Bess was named in Daniel's 1784 will. Note: The Bess named in Daniel's will may not be the same Bess bequeathed to Abraham Dodson. If the Bess in Thomas Dodson's Sr. will bequeathed to his son Abraham Dodson was about 16 years of age in 1740 when Thomas Dodson Sr. made his will this Bess would be about 60 years of age when Daniel died in 1784, and possibly older if she was older than 16 years of age in 1740.
  • Thomas, who was mentioned in his 1784 will as being valued at 75 pounds. It is likely this Thomas is the same as the enslaved male named Tom in the 1769 will of Abraham Dodson.

Shumate-25 and Shumate-4 appear to represent the same person because: Daniel Shumate-25 and Daniel Shumate-4 are the same person. Both men have the same date and place of birth and year of death. Daniel Shumate was married three times, and all three wives are listed in the biography of Daniel Shumate-25, and the name of Daniel Shumate-4's wife is included in the list of wives in the biography of Daniel Shumate-25. These men need to be merged as they are duplicates.
