Bertha was quite deaf, as was her sister Jessie with whom she lived after her husband died at their parents' former house at 199 Cowley Road, Oxford. I would visit as a child with my parents and of course they could not hear the door knocker, so the door was always able to be pushed open- you just went in and looked around for them.

I recall going down to the cellar (I don't think they had a fridge) and finding some yogurts which were months out of date- they obviously thought they were tinned goods.

After Jessie died, she went to live with her brother Leslie in his house in Abingdon (after his wife died). She continued to live there after his death.

Her aunt also married someone called George William Dodson. They emigrated to South Australia where George died in 1886.

Hi Paul

Thanks for this, I assume Bertha went out to stay with, or on recommendation of, her aunt. I see you have posted a daughter of George and Mary, is it certain they only had the one child? Is it possible that George junior was son of George Senior- in which case Bertha married her cousin? Thanks Tim

Hi Tim,

According to info that was put on her profile when it was created, she had 2 sons and 4 daughters and 2 other children who died young. She had had 4 of those children by 1871, including a George W., who might well be George junior. It looks as if he would have been about the right age.

I have added 3 more profiles for the children; another child (Beatrice) looks like a match to an existing profile.

Also found a newspaper family notice confirming George's identity, so I have linked him fully.

Paul
