Biography

Katherine Siebert Miller was the wife of George Miller I. Katherine Siebert was reared in Monroe, OH, and she was the daughter of Bernard (b. Ottenau, Baden, Germany) and Christina Scheid Siebert (b. Liederscheid, Loraine, France). According to the family records, Katheryne Cecilia was born on 1/2/1885. Katherine was the 7th child out of 8 children (5 girls and 3 boys). The 1924 Monroe High School Yearbook says that she graduated from the Monroe High School in 1902, where she worked for the Anderson and Constiner families. Mr. C was one of her teachers and taught her shorthand and bookkeeping. (Before retiring, Mr. C. taught Elsie and Louise.) When she worked in the office of Webers Brewery in Middletown, she met George W. Miller. Katherine was a homemaker. George Miller was from Middletown, OH, where the Millers had settled. Eventually George Miller took over the Bernard Siebert and Christine Scheid Sieberts' tavern and house in Monroe, OH.

The 1924 Monroe High School Year Book indicates that Elsie Miller was in the 8th grade. Florence Siebert Burton graduated in 1898 and was deceased. Tene Siebert Sauter graduated in 1901 and was deceased. Katharine Siebert Miller graduated in 1902.

Katherine Siebert met her husband, George William Miller, when they both worked at Weber Distillery. Katherine worked in the office.

She had 7 children in the following order: Louise, Elsie, George Martin, Ann, Rita, Richard (Dick), and Paul. Her son George (Georgie) died of diptheria at age 4. Georgie was born in 1916 and died in 1920. She was a knitter and sewed all of the girls clothes. She took in borders to help during the Great Depression. She played the organ although not on Sunday, and she sang off key. Katherine was good at math and she could help her son, Paul, solve problems, but could not tell him how she did it. She was about 5'5" in height, round of face, and she had dark hair. She was solid of build.

She had her last child in her middle 40's, Paul, on the kitchen table in Monroe, OH, and according to Paul, when Dr. C.F. MacCready saw her, he told her, "You should be at the hospital you old bat." Florence Kelble Beck says that the doctor referred to Katherine as "an old fool" rather than "old bat."

She took care of her husbands drunken brothers until she got to old and she couldn't do it anymore.

She was a devout Roman Catholic and member of the Catholic Ladies of Columbia. Her life long friend was Lousie Fogerty, whose husband was Mike. Kate gave her first child the name Louise, and Louise and Mike Fogerty were Louise's Godparents.

Here is an e-mail received from Florence Beck (Daughter of Louise Miller Kelble) to George Brundage (Son of Elsie Miller Brundage), her cousin in November 2013:

Very nice Bio for Uncle Andy (Anthony (Andy) F. Miller). Katherine Seibert Miller was a very loving and giving person. She helped many people including Uncle Fritz and Uncle Andy. Fritz was kind and generous to children. He worked in Middletown until retirement. When asked by Len, How do you drink that Monroe water? He replied, "I haven't had Monroe water in 10 years!" Uncle Andy stopped drinking when he went back to his wife.

Gma Kate took care of your Mother Elsie and you and Christine when you were little while your Dad had to go to work at the Air Force Base in Dayton. When you and Chris were older your Dad decided to live closer to work so he could be closer to home and take care of all of you.

Gma was very worried and upset that your Dad could take care of your Mom(MS) and two children. It did work out very well to keep you together, but you and Chris did a lot to take care of your mom and yourselves, for which we were very proud of you. Father Krusling was a t St. Helen's and would stop to visit you. Also the Little Sisters stopped to help your Mom when you were at school. My Mom, Aunt Louise was very faithful, visiting and helping your Mom. Elsie's MS continued to advance. God bless you and Christine. Love you, Florence

Katherine C. Miller, d. 3/12/1953 at age 68. She died of carcinoma, right ovary (Mocinous cyst - andenoma), which she had for 4 years. Antecedant Causes were Metastasis to pelvic lymph glands, and liver and lungs over the period of a year. Other significant conditions were broncho pneumonia the last year of her life, and for 5 years of arterio sclerosis, general.

From the memory of Florence Kelble Beck (Daughter of Louise Miller Kelble) in November 2013:

Hi George,

G.ma Miller had been in the hospital. They sent her home saying they did all that they could do. She was at home suffering the last days of cancer. Louise,(Mom and I) went down to be with Gma and Gpa. Beanie Harmon was a nurse and stayed with them 16 hrs a day. I heard Gma scream in pain a couple times before the end. At that time there wasn't much you could do for cancer, I think she might have had ovarian cancer which was extreme pain and could only be detected ..too late. I was 18 years old at the time of Grandma's death in 1953 before my graduation.

Grandpa had a huge garden, raised chickens and rabbits, and 1 or 2 pigs a year. Gma did all the canning of vegetables and fruits, their store room, attatched to the house, was always full of canning goods. She prepared chickens and rabbits for the household and for sale. She did a lot of baking, too. I loved being there and smelling all the good food she cooked.

Grandpa would butcher the pigs and make cracklins on the side porch stove, hmmmm! They always had bacon, pork chops and roasts for the winter. Gpa put cabbages and potatoes under the back-end of the house which was dry and warm for the winter. Gpa was a jack of all trades, he was city commissioner for Monroe, worked for the post office, had a shoe repair shop, a grocery store, and the family tavern. He always took care of Seven Dolors Church. He was always doing repairs. Later had houses which he rented and kept in repair, a few bungalows in Middletown. Paul and I would ride along when he collected rent. Gpa said when the shades were all pulled down, that meant the people didn't have enough money to pay the rent. He said," They always try to pay the next month if they can."

Grandma and Grandpa were devoted to their Faith and their Family. They were wonderful examples of Christianity. Love, Florence

From the memory of Sharon Miller Bevis, who is the daughter of Richard Miller, who is the son of Katherine Miller, in November 2013:

Grandma had cancer as I remember I remember Dad helping her get in and out of bed until she could no longer. I also remember the doctor giving her pills for the pain, I also remember her in her casket in the front room.
