William E. Silket (Sylcott/Silkett on his war records, but Silcott on his monument) was inducted in the Third Infantry Company, Union Army in 1863, at Parkersburg, West Virginia serving under General George Clark. He was inducted into the infantry, Co I, 11 Regiment, WV Volunteers, 23 day of April, 1863. He was wounded on October 13, 1864 at the Battle of Cedar Creek in Virginia by the explosion of a shell which hit a nearby fence. He was struck in the small of his back by a piece of wood. William recovered at the 11th West Virginia Regimental Hospital for about six weeks and returned to his regiment and was discharged on August 9, 1865, after which time he went back to his home in Mason City WV. He was described in his war records as being six feet tall, had blue eyes, fair complexion and his occupation was listed as farming.
By November 27, 1887, William and Sarah settled briefly in W̶e̶l̶s̶t̶o̶m̶ Wellston, Ohio before arriving in Nelsonville, Ohio July 24, 1888. The 1900 Census locates William's family living in a rather larger, white, two story house at the corner of High Street and Harper, in Nelsonville, Ohio, Location
Although the family owned their own farm, the sons, George, Joeb, Ralph, Charles, and Frank were also involved in railroading and coal mining.[13]
There's a William Silket listed as being part of Company K, 11th Infantry Regiment West Virginia[14]
