Birth Estimate:
Jacob SIMONS' birth estimate was taken from his death record on which he is listed with a death date of 17 July 1853 and an age at the time of his death as being 69 years, 6 months and 26 days. This would place his birth between the end of 1783 - and the beginning of 1784. The place of birth recorded on the death record was listed only as "Barbour" this would seem to indicate that this individual was born in Barbour County, Virginia (now West Virginia). However that county was not formed until 3 March 1843. At the time of his reported birth, this area was still a part of Monongalia County, Virginia. In 1784, Harrison County, Virginia was split from Monongalia County, Virginia and in 1787, Randolph County, Virginia was formed. Lewis County, Virginia was formed in 1816. Parts of Harrison County, Virginia, Lewis County, Virginia and Randolph County, Virginia were taken to form Barbour County, Virginia in 1843. The state of West Virginia did not become a state until 1863 which was well after the lifespan of this individual. As such, all place names are listed as being in Virginia (now West Virginia).
Death Record transcription:
Note: This death record is transcribed from the death record of Jacob SIMON. It appears that his wife, Sarah, incorrectly listed herself in the column that was reserved for the names of the deceased's parents. Notes from transcriber are listed in [ ] and do not appear on the actual death record.
