Note N1377From letter written by Clara(McLehaney) Shetley:
"Great grandma is buried at the Loyd(sp) Cemetery west of Bee Branch and between Damascus. I have been to her grave. When they printed a book on all the cemeteries I found where she was buried and Josephine(daughter) took me to see her grave. No one is buried near her and she has a small monument. Grandpa wanted to be buried by her. I remember him real well and I guess Dewey does too. Herman says he remembers him, and he was only three years old. But grandpa visited us because we lived near. He had a bad stroke and never did gain conciousness nor spoke. Lived two days. Papa helped carry him to the bed. He was on the porch."
Aunt Clara, in her notes, crossed out the name "Jane" and put Martha. Probably Martha and Jane are the same person. The "J" in Martha J. McLehany most likely is "Jane". I got the name Jane from the back of an old picture but can't verify the accuracy.-Tom McLehaney 1/26/2000
I attended the Higden reunion in May of 2002. Billy Potter told me that Martha is buried at Lloyd Cemetery because when she died, there had been a bad snow storm and she couldn't be brought back to be buried at the McLehaney Cemetery. - Tom McLehaney
1860 U.S. Federal Census
Andrew Lum 43 M Planter Mississippi
M.B. Lum 44 F Louisiana
Celeste A. Lum 4 F "
Eli Simmons 23 M Blacksmith "
Sarah E. Simmons 19 F "
Sam'l Simmons 15 M "
Rebecca Simmons 13 F "
Eda Simmons 11 F "
Martha E. McElhaney 28 F "
This Census shows Martha E.(Simmons) McElhaney(McLehaney) living in the household of Andrew Lum who married Rebecca (Ferguson) Simmons after her husband(Samuel) died prior to 1855(See probate documents for Samuel Simmons). It is possible that this Martha(Copiah County, MS) is the same Martha married to William McLehaney, they are the same age(28) but this census spells the name a little differently and states Martha born in Louisiana. The 1860 Census for Simpson County shows Martha J., his wife, living in the household of William McLehaney. William did not join the Confederacy until 1863 so he should not have been off to war in 1860. It is certainly a coincidence that these two names so close together show up in the same family.
The Hazlehurst, Copiah Co., Miss. marriage index shows Mrs Rebecca Simmons married to A R Lum on March 21, 1854.
Rebecca would be 44 in this census which is correct so the M B Lum shown must be Rebecca Ferguson Simmons. Tom McLehaney 2006.
