Biography

Bertha was born in 1884. She passed away in 1972. According to John Thomas Stone, my uncle (conversation at a Simmons Family Reunion in New Franklin, Missouri: "Henry Edward Stone and Benjamin C. Simmons were good friends. Cooper county was confederate and they wanted to fight for the union so they went to Sturgeon, Missouri and joined the Cavalry.....now, John McNeil Simmons and William Edward Stone were also good friends and John McNeil gave his oldest daughter to William to wed..."

I remember that Grandma Lawson (Bertha Simmons) paid us a visit on our farm in Slater, Missouri. We went outside and she showed me how to make a quilt (all hand stitched). The quilt stayed with me for many years on up into adulthood and motherhood and went on many camping trips.
