John Simmons was born on 9 October 1790 in South Carolina. He was the son of Robert Simmons and Ann Miller. He married Naomi Jared, daughter of Captain William Jared and Elizabeth Raulston, on 5 October 1815 in Buffalo Valley, Jackson County, Tennessee. He died on 1 October 1868 in Wright County, Missouri, at age 77. He was buried in Old Mountain Grove Cemetery, also called Old Pioneer's Cemetery, Wright County, Missouri.
As a boy John Simmons accompanied his parents to what is now in Franklinton, Washington Parish, Louisiana. When British invasion of Louisiana appeared eminent he joined the 13th Louisiana Militia. He enlisted at Covington, St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, and served as a private in Captain William Bickham's Company, 13th Louisiana Volunteer Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Thomas C. Warner, Commander.[1] He was in the Battle of New Orleans and appears in the Company Muster Rolls as follows: 23 Dec 1814 to 31 Jan 1815, 23 Dec 1814 to 10 Mar 1815 (Rolls dated New Orleans), 31 Jan 1815 - Parish of St. Tammany, LA, 10 Mar 1815, signed - O.L. Taylor. He was honorably discharged on 10 March 1815 in New Orleans, Louisiana, and afterward returned with his brother-in-law, Colonel James Raulston, to Jackson County, Tennessee, who returned to Nashville with his Regiment where it was discharged on 15 May 1815. There he met and married Colonel Raulston's niece, Naomi Jared. John and Naomi migrated to Perry County, Missouri, then to Carroll County, Arkansas, Greene County, Missouri, where John received bounty land for War of 1812 service, then to Oregon County, Missouri, and finally to Wright County, Missouri, where John died in 1868.[2]

Letter to CCT from Brig. Gen. P. M. Robinette dated 23 April 1966: "John Simmons, son of Robert Simmons, and his wife Naomi (Jared) Simmons are buried here in the Old Cemetery. He was living with his father in Louisiana during the War of 1812 and enlisted in the 13th. La. Militia. After the Battle of New Orleans he returned to Tennessee with his brother in law, Colonel James Raulston, commander of the 3d Tennessee regiment of Militia, married and came west."

John Simmons died 1 Oct 1868 and was first buried near Thomasville, Mo. His wife Naomi Jared died in Mountain Grove, Mo., 24 Dec. 1876 and was buried in the Old Cemetery. John's remains were later moved and reburied beside her.
