Sarah Simmons was the daughter of Capt. Charles Simmons of Laurens County, SC. She married David Madden. Sarah was at least 18 in 1791 because in her father’s will of that year, she was to receive 1 horse and saddle, 1 bed and furniture, and 2 cows and calves, whereas her younger sisters (Elizabeth and Jean) were said to receive the same as they become of age. This would put Sarah’s year of birth no later than 1773. The 1810 census shows Sarah as a female up to 45 years and the wife of David. In the 1820 census, Sarah’s household contains: 1 female 40-45, 1 male 16-18, 2 females 0-10, 2 females 10-16, and 1 female 26-45. Sarah Simmons Madden was counted on 1829 Special SC Census with 2 in her household. Her son John Madden with 3 in his household was also listed. Her husband David died in September of 1821. In 1822, Sarah was named in her mother Elizabeth’s will and received a small Negro boy named Bob. In the 1830 US Census for Laurens County, Sarah Simmons Madden is living alone with two slaves. Her son John Madden appears to live next door. Henry Madden lives nearby. Sarah is still living alone in 1840 according to 1840 US Census Laurens SC.
