Biography

Leverett Jerome Simpson, son of Jerome Madison Simpson and Nancy Ann (Griffin) Simpson, was born on 7 March 1871[1] at New York, USA. He and his mother with other family members appeared on the census of 12 June 1880 in the household of Lorenzo Crosby at, Steuben County, New York.[2] He appeared on the census of 1892 in the household of his parents at Jasper, Steuben County, New York.[3] He was a lawyer when he appeared on the census of 5 June 1900 at Canisteo, Steuben County, New York.[4]

He married Eva L. Taft, daughter of Merit M. Taft and Mariah (--?--), on 8 Aug. 1900 at Steuben Co., New York.[5]

He and Eva appeared on the census of 18 April 1910 at 51 East Main St., Canisteo, Steuben Co., New York.[6] He was a lawyer in general practice when he and Eva appeared on the census of 9 Jan. 1920 at Prospect Ave., Canisteo, Steuben Co., New York.[7] He was an attorney when he and Eva appeared on the census of 10 April 1930 at Canisteo, Steuben Co., New York.[8]

He wrote: Aaron Griffin of Bridgeport, Onondaga Co, NY and His Descendants which was published in Hornell, NY, April 24, 1938.[9] Aaron Griffin was the great-grandfather of Leverett.

Leverett J. Simpson, a practicing Attorney of Hornell and Canisteo, was born March 7, 1871 in the Town of Jasper. He was graduated from Canisteo Acamdemy in 1890, then took 2 years of postgraduate work at the same school. He studied law 3 years in the office of Attorney Eli Soule, of Canisteo and was admitted to the bar in 1899, at Rochester. He began practice in Canesteo and has maintained an office there. He was first in partnership with Mr. Soule, this associateion continuing until the latter's death. From 1915 to 1923 Mr. Simpson was in partnership with Judge A.W. Burrello. In 1930 he formed at Hornell a partnership with James G. Austin and Harry K. Morton; this continuing until May 1, 1934 when Mr. Austin withdrew. Mr. Simpson served on the Canisteo Board of Education for 7 years, being President 1 year. He is a member of Morning Star Lodge No. 65, F.& A. M. He has been a member of the official board of the Canisteo M.E. Church since 1901. He is now President of the Laymen's Association of the Genesee Conference. For years he taught a Men's Bible Class, and he served as Sunday School Superintendent for 13 years. In 1932 he was the delegate from the Genesee Conference to the church convention held at Altlantic City, where the deliberations continued for a month. He was the second President of the Canisteo Rotary Club. He is a member of the County, State and National Bar Associations. He has been Secretary of the Farmers Cooperative Fire Insurance Co. since 1915. On August 8, 1900 he married Eva Taft of Jasper, N.Y. One daughter, Maria Elizabeth, now Mrs. Ward E. Magoon. She was graduated with honors in the musical course at Lima Seminary.[10]

He and Eva appeared on the census of 11 April 1940 at 99 Main St., Hornell, Steuben County, New York.[11] He lived in Nov. 1950 at 198 Main St., Hornel, New York. Leverett died on 6 March 1964[1] at Bethesda Hospital, Hornell, Steuben County, New York, at age 92 and was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery, Canisteo, Steuben County, New York. His memorial has the dates of his birth and death.[12]

Attorney Simpson Dies at Hospital
Leverett J. Simpson of 99 Genesee St., Hornell, oldest lawyer in Steuben County, died this morning at Bethesda Hospital, where he had been a patient for several days.
Simpson, who celebrated his 93rd birthday Saturday, was born in Jasper and practiced law in Canisteo for several years after being admitted to the bar in 1899. He was admitted to the U. S. Bar Association in 1902.
He moved to Hornell in 1937 and practiced law here until his retirement last year.
Simpson was awarded a medal for his work for Selective Service during World War II. He had also received a certificate as a long-time representative for Fidelity and Deposit Company of Maryland.
A member of Morning Star Lodge, No. 65 F and AM in Canisteo, he had a 60-year Masonic membership metal. He was also a charter member and past president of Canisteo Rotary Club and later a member of Hornell Rotary.
He was a co-founder of Woodlawn Cemetery in Canisteo and was active in Canisteo Methodist Church and later in Park Methodist Church in Hornell. He taught the Lovell Bible Class for many years and was lay leader at Hornell church.
Survivors include a daughter Mrs. Heyward J. Pearce of Rochester; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The body is at Crandall and Crandall Funeral Home in Hornell, where a Masonic memorial service will be held at 8 p.m. tomorrow by Morning Star Lodge, F and AM. The funeral service will be held there at 2 p.m. Thursday with Rev. Charles Titus of Park Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Canisteo.[13]

The photo of Leverett as a young boy, copy in images, was included in a photo album belonging to Diadama (Hudson) Griffin, and later to Mary Jane (Griffin) Smith, her daughter. The handwriting is likely Mary Jane's.
