MR. WALTER SIMPSON.
ATHERTON. Aug. 26.—Another pioneer of the Tablelands passed on last night when Walter Simpson. aged 60 years, died at the Atherton hospital after a long illess.
A timber man of good standing, the deceased was well known and respected among the men who have made their livelihood out of the Harvesting and selling of what has always been the Tableland's finest crop—the trees. A splendid and enthusiastic worker, he was one of those men who dignify the name of labour by adding to it initiative and faith.
He was born in Tallebudgera. Queensland, and came to Atherton in 1913 with his wife, who before her marriage was Miss Margaret Schmaeling, Toowoomba.
He immediatly went into the timber business and remained in it until ill-heath forced him to relinquish his work.
He was a fine shot and was captain of the Rifle Club for 30 years ranking in his scores with the late Eddie Ladner. He was also a past grandmaster af the M.U.I.O.O.F Lodge. He was a member of the Atherton Hospital Board for a number of years and until the time of his death.
He leaves a widow, four sons and four daughters to mourn their loss.
The daughters are Kathleen (Mrs. Porter Mt Isa), Thelma and Betty Atherton) and Marjorie (Brisbane). The sons are Charles (of the firm of Simpson and Hedges, printers Atherton), Dick (Mussellbrook, New South Wales), Les (Mt.Isa) and Jim (Atherton) and five grandchildren.
The funeral took place from the Presbyterian Church today.
