Excerpts on Asa Simpson From Mrs. Royden Caulk and the "History of Onslow County"
I remember Granddaddy as a gentle man. He always had a ready smile and time to share a tale with children. he was not a drinking man but in his latter years when he came to visit, he would enjoy a little toddy that my Mother would fix for him. He was Likely to get up in the morning feeling weak and trembly.
Asa was born December 4, 1854. He married Annie Elizabeth Horne in 1874 when she was sixteen. They owned a small farm in the Back Swamp area. I do not know if he inherited the farm or bought it. Nine children were born on the farm. Sometime between 1892 and 1896 Asa sold his farm and moved to Craven County to become a share cropper or tenant farmer. Just why he sold the farm is not known. Perhaps it was to support his growing family, or perhaps he became restless as his father before him and went in search of a better life."
Following a few years of farming in Craven County, Asa moved his clan to Jones County where most of his children grew to adulthood and began to marry off. They were living in a farm community known as Little Hell.
Asa moved his family back to Onslow in the early 1900's. One year they lived on the old Henderson farm , located on 17S across from the old County Home in the Triangle between 17 and 258.
Following the death of his wife and the marriage of his last son, Asa gave up farming. He took his remaining four girls to town. Asa Had a shoe repair shop and did this work as long as he was able."[1]
