Biography

Annie, daughter of Ananias Theodore Simpson and Amanda "Eva" Baker,[1] was born 27 February 1877 (or 1878) in Mount Pleasant Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.[1] By 1880, her parents Ananias (age 26, carpenter) and Amanda (25) had moved to Bunker Hill, Westmoreland County, with their children Luella C. (4) and Lydia Ann (2).[2]

On 19 July 1896 in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, she married Samuel "Allen" Dodson,[3] son of Benjamin Franklin "Frank" Dodson and Susannina C. Yingling.[4] Officiating was Rev. G. W. Sherrick.[3] Allen and Annie had four children:

  1. Edwin Eugene Edge (1925–1988).[15][16][17]
  2. Living Edge.
  3. Donald Kaye Edge (1931–2013).[18][19][20]
  1. Living widowed daughter.

Anne L. Dodson (22. mother of two, both living) and Allen S. (age 27) had purchased a home on the alley between Broadway Street and Fairview Avenue in Pitcairn, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, before the census was taken on 8 June 1900.[29] Allen piled lumber for the Pennsylvania Railroad to support his wife and their children Chester Allen (3) and Elsie Irene (1).[29]

Having paid off the mortgage on their property, Allen S. (age 37, teamster for Tilbrook Farms Grocery in Pitcairn), Annie L. (32, mother of six, four living), and their children Chester A. (13), Elsie I. (11), Collins Orlando (8) and Ruth Naomi (6) remained in the same home in 1910.[30]

The family composition was stable in 1920 and they remained in Pitcairn: Allen (age 48, machinist for the Pennsylvania Railroad), Anna (42), Chester A. (23, railroad laborer), Elsie I. (21, stenographer for the railroad), Collins O. (18) and Ruth N. Dodson (16).[31]

Most of the children having established their own households, only Allen S. (age 57, railroad car inspector), Anna L. (52) and their son Chester A. (33, laborer, airbrake manufacturing) remained in the family home at 621 Third Street, Pitcairn, in 1930.[32] Chester is shown to be a veteran of World War I.[32] The record also indicates that the Dodsons owned their home (valued at $4,800) and a radio.[32]

Chester married in 1937[8] and Ruth divorced and moved back into her mother's home before 1940, when the household at 621 Third Street consisted of the retired Allen S. (age 67), Anna L. (60) and Ruth A. Dodson (36).[33] The record shows that Allen and Anna had both completed eight years of formal education, while Ruth had graduated from high school.[33]

Annie died 17 December 1948 at the Women's Hospital in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, from heart disease and diabetes at age 70.[1] She was buried 20 December 1948 at Grandview Cemetery in North Versailles, Allegheny County.[34]
