Sims, Samuel John and Mary Susan Oyler of Pima
Samuel John Sims was born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England in 1850. He was the only surviving son of George Sims and Caroline Gill Sims. At the age of thirteen he came to America with his widowed mother and four sisters. Samuel John had been taught in the building trades by his father. By the age of twelve years he was qualified in carpentering and related trades. In Utah he became the main support of his mother and sisters until the sisters were grown and married. At about twenty-one years, in Payson, he met Mary Susan Oyler, and they were married 18 July 1871. Mary Susan was born in Rocky Mount, Franklin County, Virginia, the daughter of Ammon Oyler, a Virginia plantation owner, and Delilah Turner (Turnbull) Oyler. The Oyler family had joined the Mormon Church and had just arrived in Utah in the Spring of 1871. Then later with other pioneers they journeyed to the Gila Valley in Graham County, arriving there in 1881. This group of pioneers settled at first North of the Gila River at a spot named "Curtis", later known as Eden. Here John and Susan filed on some farming land and built a good home of logs, the only material available at the time, for the family to live in. By the year 1889 he had disposed of his farm, and it was in Pima that he finally became firmly established as a builder. He erected a large lumber building on Main Street in Pima, where he built and sold furniture to the growing populace of the valley. He manufactured by hand, many articles that were not otherwise available, including coffins, etc. This store and shop is believed to be the first of it's kind in the Gila Valley. Soon John had finished a lovely two-story brick home on the lot next to the furniture store, and the Sims family moved from their temporary living quarters in the rear of the store building. Susan was as successful in her homemaking as John in his business, and this home with it's large veranda, spacious yards and shade trees was the center of welcome and hospitality for old and young alike. He built the early homes of the Marshall's, Anderson's , Weech's, Lines's, W. T. Webb's, etc. Samuel John died in his home in Thatcher, February 26, 1920. Susan lived on in the home her husband had built for her until she became an invalid and had to live with her children. She passed away while living in the home of her daughter Clara McBride in Thatcher, May 11, 1933. The Sims children are well known to most residents of the Gila Valley, and most of them continued to reside in the Valley for many years. The daughters were: Elizabert (Lizzie) Higgins, Susan Cluff, Lucy Cluff, Clara McBride, Maud Wightman and Nancy Phillips. Amanda died as a young child. The sons were: George, Ammon, Albert and Oscar.
