George Washington Sims was born on 6 Nov 1856 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, the 6th child of English immigrants William and Louisa (Stokes) Sims. On 4 July 1861, William was orphaned when his parents were killed in a fire caused by a kerosene lamp explosion. According to family lore, George was taken in by the Hoskins family.

On 10 Dec 1878, George marries Mary Grace Eade in Hawley, Pennsylvania. According to the 1880 US Federal Census, George is a cabinet maker and lives next door to his in-laws. George and Mary have 4 children while living in Pennsylvania.

Around 1893, the family moved to Falls Church, Virginia where George opened an office for the Keystone Plaster Company. Sadly, he died of typhoid fever only 2 years later on 18 July 1895. George never saw his youngest son. George William Sims was born 6 months after his father's death.
