Death of Martin W. SIMS:

Although no death record has been found for this individual, the following Probate records establish that he died prior to 22 February 1882.

On 22 February 1882, M. A. McCLUNG was appointed the Administrator of the Estate of Martin SIMS by the county court and the Bond of $2,000 was paid by M. A. McCLUNG, William P. PRICE, A. J. PICKERELL, Henry M. SIMS and Charles M. SIMS.[2] This was done after Susanna SIMS, the widow of Martin SIMS had waved her rights to be the administrator of her husband's estate by a written statement on 22 February 1882.[3]
On 3 March 1882, W. K. BOARD, C. N. SMITH and Perry G. SIMS took their oaths that they would make an accurate appraisement of the estate of Martin Sims and make the information known to the court at Roane County, West Virginia.[4] The Estate appears to have been sold and accounts were settled up to 26 February 1884.

Residences, before Marriage:

1820
1830

Marriage:

He was married on 16 March 1837 in Lewis County, Virginia to Susannah WAGGONER.[5], [6], [7], [8], [9]

Spouse:

Susannah WAGGONER was born about 16 March 1814 in Jesse Run, Harrison County, Virginia (now West Virginia)[8] and died after 1880 when she was recorded in the census as living with her husband in Reedy, Roane County, West Virginia.[10], [7] Her find a grave memorial suggests she died on 15 February 1882, but no death record for that date has been found for her at the West Virginia Vital Research Records Site.[11] She was the daughter of Johann "John" Michael WAGGONER and Susannah RICHARDS. She is buried in Sims Cemetery, Reedy, Roane County, West Virginia.

  • Find A Grave, database and images (https://www.findagrave.com : accessed 03 May 2018), memorial page for Susanna Waggoner Sims (16 Mar 1814–15 Feb 1882), Find A Grave: Memorial #7472714, citing Sims Cemetery, Reedy, Roane County, West Virginia, USA ; Maintained by Carol Taylor-Lanza (contributor 46572807). [No tombstone picture]

Name:

She is most often seen with the name of Susannah or a variation of that name, but there is at least one document that lists her by the name of Susan.

Birth of Susannah WAGGONER

There are no birth records available in the time period that she would have been born. Don Norman's notes stated she was born on 16 March 1814 in Jesse Run, Harrison County, Virginia.[8] Since a death record has not been found for her we cannot check that record for any possible information that would have been recorded on that document about her age or date of birth.

Residences, Before Marriage:

1820 - She is believed to have been in the household of her father, Johann "John" Michael WAGGONER during this census year.[12]
1830 - She is believed to have been in the household of her father, Johann "John" Michael WAGGONER during this census year.[13]

Residences, After Marriage:

1840 - There is a household for a Martin SIMS in Lewis County, Virginia[14] in 1840, but the oldest male is listed as being 50 to 60 years of age. There is an adult male in the household that was 20 to 30 years of age which would coincide with the estimated age of Martin SIMS per the 1850 census record (Age in 1850 was 35 years so estimated age in 1840 should have been 25 years). The adult female in the household was 20 to 30 years old. It is possible the older male in the household could have been his father or another relative. There were also two male children under the age of 5 years. The list of Martin W. SIMS and Susannah WAGGONER's children list two probable matches to these two children: Granville W. SIMS who would have been about 2 or 3 years of age and John Wesley SIMS who would have been about 1 year old at the time of the census record.
1850 - Wirt County, Virginia[15]
1860 - Reedy (post office), Roane County, Virginia[16]
1870 - Three Forks, Reedy (post office), Reedy Township, Roane County, West Virginia[17]
1880 - Reedy, Roane County, West Virginia[10], [7]

The 1866 explosion of the First Steam sawmill in Reedy, West Virginia:

In 1866, the first steam sawmill exploded killing five men. An account by Edgar B. Sims stated that his grandfather, " Granville W. SIMS as a young man went with his father, Martin Sims, a part-owner of the mill, and heard his father warn the men that the boiler was getting too hot and would blow. They then got on their horse and headed for home, hearing the blast when some distance away." [18]

Children of Martin W. SIMS and Susannah WAGGONER:

  1. Granville W. SIMS[14], [15] (Born: January 1837 in Harrison County, Virginia; Died: About 1868 in West Virginia; Buried in Sims Cemetery, Cains Run, Roane County, West Virginia[19]); Married: 25 March 1857 in Wirt County, Virginia to Sarah Catherine SHEPPARD.[20]; He is living next door to his parents with his wife, Sarah and their two sons in the 1860 Census record;[21] Military: Served in Company D of the 46th Virginia Calvary in the Confederate States of America.[19] Captured by union forces in July 1863 and exchanged for a horse and bounty.[19]
  2. John Wesley SIMS[14], [15] (Born: 20 October 1839 in Lewis County, Virginia; Died: About 1901 in Wirt County, West Virginia; Buried in Sims Cemetery, Reedy, Roane County, West Virginia[22]); Married (1): 18 December 1867 in Roane County, West Virginia to Anna Eliza PICKERELL;[23] Married (2): 25 September 1866 in Wirt County, West Virginia to Sarah Cordellia PRICE;[24] Military: Served as 1st Lt. Company G 10th Virginia Calvary in the Confederate States of America[22]
  3. Edward J. SIMS[15], [16] (Born: About 1842 in Virginia[15])
  4. Henry Madison SIMS[15], [16] (Born: about 1844 in Harrison County, Virginia); Married: 27 April 1864 in Wirt County, West Virginia to Roselyn WALKER[25] - Note: There is no date on the marriage record, the last recorded date was 27 April 1864.
  5. Perry J. SIMS[15], [16] (Born: About 17 May 1845 in Wirt County, Virginia; Died: 30 January 1920 in Wirt County, West Virginia; Buried: Center Valley Cemetery in Wirt County, West Virginia[26]); Married: 22 August 1869 in Wirt County, West Virginia to Nancy FULL[27]
  6. Olive M. SIMS[15], [16] (Born: about 2 March 1847 in Virginia; Died: 26 September 1890 in Peewee, Wirt County, West Virginia; Buried: Center Valley Cemetery, Wirt County, West Virginia); Married: 13 August 1868 in Roane County, West Virginia to Lewis FULL[28]
  7. Mary Louisa SIMS[15], [16], [17] (Born: July 1849 in Virginia; Died: 18 October 1902 in Reedy, Wirt County, West Virginia[29]); Married: 12 December 1872 in Roane County, West Virginia to William Preston PRICE[30]
  8. Minter B. SIMS (Born: Between 1850 and 24 February 1852; Died: 24 February 1852) - possible match - a tombstone in the Sims Cemetery in Ready, Roane County, West Virginia that stated "Minter B. son of M. and S. SIMS born Feb -- 1852 35 yrs."[31] the problem would be that Minter B. SIMS did not show up on any of his parents census enumerations. If he lived to be 35 years old where was he in 1860, 1870, etc.?
  9. Susan Elizabeth SIMS[16], [17] (Born: 14 November 1853 in Jackson County, Virginia; Died: Between 1 January 1894 and 7 September 1899 probably in Roane County, West Virginia); Married: 8 March 1872 in Roane County, West Virginia to Andrew Jackson PICKERELL[32]
  10. Martin Luther "Lute" SIMS[16], [17] (Born: 30 March 1856 in Virginia; Died: 15 July 1894; Buried in Sims Cemetery in Reedy, Roane County, West Virginia); Married: Elizabeth Catherine SLEETH[33] [34]

Research Progress

To do:
  1. Check Inventories, appraisments, bills of sale, Roane County : 1857-1900 at Family History Center for possible leads on death of both Martin W. SIMS and Susannah (WAGGONER) SIMS.
Already checked Will book, v. 1-3 1857-1933 in Roane County, West Virginia for any records in the search for anyone with last name of Sim* on 23 August 2018.
Already checked the Bond Book Vols. 1-2 1860-1905 in Roane County, West Virginia in the index included in both of the books and did not see any Sims listed.

Notes:

1. Susanna's mother's maiden name was RICHARDS, but she is listed with the surname of RUNYON on her marriage record. Her father was Paul Richards who, along with his brother Arnold, were killed in an Indian raid on 6 August 1782 in Harrison County, Virginia.[35] [36] At the time of her father's death, Susannah RICHARDS would have been, at most, only about 1 or 2 years old, if not an infant child. She was placed under the guardianship of a man named John RUNYON and became his ward. John RUNYON raised her until adulthood and at the time of her marriage, Susanna was using her guardian's surname of Runyon as her own surname.

2. In 1870 Benjamin WAGGONER (age: 15 years) is living with Martin and Susanna Sims.[17]

3. Question the picture on the findagrave memorial for Martin Luther Sims is actually him. He was only 38 y/o when he died if the death date is correct which brings a question of the birth year on the memorial as well. What has been established is that he was married to a Cathern Sleeth who was the informant on their son's death record and they were living in Reedy in 1880 with two children. There is no marriage, death or birth records for Martin and only a death for a Catherine Brown died July 1934, buried in Reedy, WV and the obituary on her findagrave memorial.

4. Note: Don Norman did a report on the family of Martin W. SIMS, but the family notes he provided state that Martin W. SIMS' parents were John W. and Mary Margaret (WEST) SIMS.[37] I have not been able to find documentation that proves this parentage.

5. In 1971, Mrs. Mazie Sims Cochran compiled a book entitled "Sims Family History" and self published it in South Charleston, West Virginia. A copy of this publication was found in the West Virginia State Archives. In this publication (on p. 6) she mentioned a John SIMS who enlisted in the Revolutionary War from Augusta County in 1777 and later moved to Lewis County (about 1819 per his revolutionary war pension application). She mentioned that she believed that Martin W. SIMS was the grandson of this John SIMS and that John SIMS, the revolutionary war soldier, had at least two sons named John W. SIMS and William SIMS.

6. It is not known the connection between Bernard SIMS and Martin W. SIMS, but John WAGGONER, father of Susannah WAGGONER was definitely an associate of the Sims families in the area. In the same book by Mrs. Mazie Sims Cochran (p. 10) she states information taken from "History of Tucker County," p. 30 - 31 that: "In March 1780, a band of Shawnee Indians crossed the Ohio River, near Parkersburg, and raided through the central counties of Western Virginia. However the news of the Indian approach preceded them and the settlers along Cheat River moved into Fort Minear which stood in the present village of St. George at the site where the first Tucker County court house was later built. A few families that had one or more members suffering with smallpox were not allowed to move into the fort. this was a harsh course to pursue but it was deemed better for a few to risk the indians that for the whole company to be stricken with the dreadful disease.

"Among those excluded was the Bernard Sims family and the John Waggoner family. Sims had been brought to the area as a tenant farmer by Thomas Parsons. He was living in a log cabin on the upper part of Thomas Parsons' land about three miles above Fort Minear. The cabin was situated near Brannon Run, on the hill above present State Route 72, and opposite of where M. L. Blair now lives. (The location is 3.2 miles below Parsons by actual speedometer reading.) One of James Parsons' old slaves, a ... woman who was the mother of 15 children, was working for and living with the Sims family.
"The indians were sneaking up to the Sims cabin when they were observed by the ... slave. She gave the alarm and Bernard Sims, just recovering from the smallpox, seized his rifle and rushed outside. An Indian, hid behind a huge sycamore tree nearby, shot him dead and rushed forward to scalp him as the others rushed to the house to kill those within. Upon observing the pox on Sims' face and hands and realizing that he was afflicted with the terrible disease, so dreaded by all indians, he let out a yell and they took flight in all directions, screaming, "Smallpox!" at the top of their voices.
"Historians have fixed the date of this attack as 6 April 1780."

8. Reported Possible Siblings of Martin W. SIMS:

The following individuals were also reportedly children of John W. SIMS and Polly CURTIN (possibly married May 1811). They were listed in Mrs. Mazie Sims Cochran's book on p. 12:
  1. Nelson SIMS (born: about 1811); married (1): on 12 June 1832 in Jackson County, Virginia to Jane PARSONS; Married (2): 23 September 1848 to Elizabeth SNIDER; Married (3): to a woman named Susan who was the widow of Homes HILL. Nelson was a shoemaker by occupation.
  2. Frank SIMS who married Sallie LAWSON. Frank was an early merchant in PeeWee, Wirt County, West Virginia.
  3. Leonard SIMS - lived in Ritchie County, West Virginia
  4. Elijah SIMS
