Research Notes

At present there is no indication that this line is connected to the Sinclairs of Rosslyn, however, they clearly existed and held the lands of Rosslyn prior to the establishment of the Barony, castle and chapel. Crawford-15512 04:26, 24 September 2022 (UTC)

Disambiguation

Because the association of the Sinclair or St Clare family with Roslin dates only to 1280, and Rosslyn Castle itself was not built until the late 14th century, the following profiles must be considered to at least have legendary overtones, if not being entirely legendary:

  • William Sinclair, born Scotland 1028
  • Catherine de St Clair, born Normandy 1058 and married Hugh de Payen, possibly the first Knight Templar.
  • Henry Sinclair, born Rosslyn Castle 1074
  • William Sinclair, born 1100. - attached to this profile as a child, no sources have yet been found to support the relationship. Crawford-15512 01:32, 25 September 2022 (UTC)
  • Catherine St Clair, born Rosslyn, Midlothian, Scotland in 1109. Married Thomas I Payne, born 1145 in Market Bosworth, Leicestershire, England, son of Hugh de Payne and his wife Catherine Saint Claire.
  • Henry Sinclair, born Roslin 1110
  • Henry de St Clair, born 1130 (date is a guess)
  • Margaret de St Clair. born 1130 (date is a guess)

Given that Roslin was granted to William Sinclair about 1280 who had married Alicia de Roskelyn the Roslin heiress I find the giving of Roslin or Rosslyn Castle as birth place of this and other family members highly suspect
