Barbara Singer was born in 1803 in Mühlhofen, Bergzabern, Pfalz, in what is today Germany to Johann David Singer and Maria Anna Gehl. The Pfalz was then under French occupation and administration as part of the French Département du Bas Rhin. Her father was a farmer and her family was part of the Calvinist community. When she was 22 in 1825, she married George Peter Röller in Mühlhofen, which was then in the Bavarian Rheinpfalz and part of the German Confederation. Barbara and Georg Peter settled to farm in Mühlhofen. They had three sons and a daughter together there before emigrating as a family to America in 1846. Another daughter was born during the 40-day sea voyage to America, but died shortly afterwards and was buried at sea. The family settled to farm in North Collins, New York. Barbara's husband passed away in 1857, and in 1865, she was living with her son George Peter's family. Barbara died in 1867 and she is buried with her husband and other family members in the Dittman Cemetery in North Collins, NY.

There are at least two towns named Billigheim in Germany: one in Baden just east of Mosback in Baden-Württemberg, and one that is now part of the Billigheim-Ingenheim municipality in the Südliche Weinstraße district in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It is this latter town in Rhineland-Palatinate where the Röller's came from. Billigheim-Ingenheim is composed of four smaller towns: Billigheim, Ingenheim, Appenhofen and Mulhofen. It is situated about 10 km north of the French border and 15 km west of the Rhine river.
The German state of Rhineland-Palatinate (Rheinland-Pfalz in German) has a complicated history. Before 1789, it was a patchwork of principalities with Billigheim appearing as part of the Kurpfalz, or Electoral Palatinate. From 1792 to 1813, the area was under French rule and in 1801 the Kurpfalz was dissolved in the Treaty of Lunéville. The area which included Billigheim was then administered as part of the Département du Bas Rhin. After Napoleon's defeat in 1815, the region became Rheinpfalz and was under the authority of Bayern/Bavaria until at least the 1860s. Baden was the name of the region just across the Rhine.
These various changes explain why the Roeller's report their German birthplace variously as Bayern, Baden and Prussia.
