Disputed Origins

There is no documented source for a maiden name of SISSON, and connections to Bocking, Essex have been disputed. See Jane Fletcher Fiske's "William Swift of London and Sandwich, Mass." in The American Genealogist, vol 77 (2002):161 for the most recent research done. This article identifies that William Swift married Joan widow of Roger Dimbleby and that Roger was likely from Wilbarston, Northamptonshire, son of Andrew. Parish records there are incomplete / missing. But it does suggest at least a region of England from which Joan came.

Biography

Joan (---) (Dimbleby) Swift, b. possibly in Northamptonshire, England on an unknown date, place and of unknown parents. She died testate on 26 Nov 1663 at Sandwich, Massachusetts.

By 1622 (record of first known child), Joan married first, Roger Dimbleby, by whom she had four known children (Hester, Andrew, and two sons named Roger) baptized at St. Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey, Surrey, England. Unfortunately all four died with five years of birth and were buried at St. Mary Magdalen Bermondsey. Her husband, Roger Dimbleby, was buried at St. Mary Magdalen Bermondsey on 15 Sept 1625.

She married second, on Jan. 3, 1625/6 at St Mary Magdalen Bermondsey, as his 2nd wife, William Swift, a citizen and leather seller of London. He died intestate at Sandwich, Massachusetts, probably in late 1642, as the extensive inventory of his estate at Sandwich was filed with the Plymouth Court on 29 Jan 1643/3. They had three children baptized at St. Mary Magdalen. They are outlined in their father's memorial.

Note: The claim by Frank Allaben, in Journal of American Genealogy 2:20 that Joane was not mother of any of William's children, was subsequently disproven by Fiske.

Joan, husband William Swift, William's daughter Hannah by his 1st wife, and Joan and William's two surviving children William and Esther, arrived in New England in about 1634 settling first at Watertown, Massachusetts. (Others claim Sudbury.[citation needed] By 1640, the family was residing at Sandwich.

She survived her husband by many years. In October 1660, she was fined 4 pounds for "being att Quakers meetings" along with Robert Harper and his wife, Joseph Allen, John Newland and his wife, William Allen, William Gifford, Matthew Allen, the wife of Henry Dillingham, William Newland and his wife, John Soule, Rodolphus Elmes, Peter Gaunt, Dorothy Butler, Obadiah Butler, John Jenkins, Richard Kerby Sr., Richard Kerby Jr., John Smith of Plymouth and his wife Deborah, Lydia Hickes of Plymouth, and Henry Howland.[citation needed]

Last Will & Testament

In Joan's will dated Oct. 12, 1662, she gave [in annotated form]:

  • to her step-grandsons Samuel and John Wing [sons of her step-dau. Hannah (Swift) Wing] a mare foal of a year old;
  • to her grandchild Hannah Swift [eldest child of son William] the old mare, if she [the old mare] be alive, if not, the next to her;
  • to her grandchild Experience Allen [dau. of dau. Esther (Swift) Allen] a chest with drawers and my Bible;
  • to her two grandchildren Hannah Swift [dau. of son William] and Experience Allen [dau. of dau. Esther] all my linen and my pewter, to be equally divided between them;
  • to Mary Darbey her wearing clothes;
  • to Hannah Winge the Elder [her step-dau. Hannah (Swift) Wing] my best hat and forty shillings to her daughters, to be divided amongst them;
  • to Jedediah Allen and Experience Allen [children of dau. Esther] the third part of my estate, this house and garden being part of the third;
  • to her son William's children, each of them a mare foal; and "my debts being discharged, and my funeral being paid, I give the rest of my Estate to my son William, whom I make my Executor."

Joan signed her will by a mark. Her will was shown to the court on 3 March 1663/4, however, the will was not fully proved to the Court until 30 May 1665 because the witness Mr. John Dimont was absent and wasn't deposed until 20 April 1664. The inventory of her estate was taken by Richard Bourne and James Skiffe on Dec. 25, 1663 and filed with the Plymouth General Court by the executor Mar. 3, 1663/4.[1]

Charles W. Swift wrote: "Jedediah Allen, son of Ralph and Easter (or Esther), writes in the family Bible as follows: 'Jone Swift, my grandmother, deceased ye 26 day, ---" the rest is torn off with the leaf. As her will bears date Oct. 12, 1662, and the inventory of her estate was taken Dec. 25, 1663, she probably died Nov. 26, 1663.'"[2]

The Dimblebys and some associates appear to have been fellmongers and leathersellers. There are other Dimblebys in Bermondsey whose wills I’ve looked at but no mention of Roger although I suspect they are related but the wills are after Roger died and that’s possibly the reason for no mention. Also it appears that all his children died young so they wouldn’t get a mention either. The main reason for the Wilbarston connection is the Will of Symon Humfrey who is mentioned as being a cousin of Roger’s and Symon mentions Wilbarston in his will.

I’ll see if I can transcribe Roger’s and Symon’s wills. I think both are fairly short

This Dimbleby, going by the unusual first name should be connected but I haven't read through the will yet

Libij died in about 1637 in Dedham, Essex, England. Their will passed probate on 29 June 1637.<ref> Will: "England & Wales, Prerogative Court of Canterbury Wills, 1384-1858"

Looking at the Will of Symon Humfreys who Roger Dimblely refers to as his cousin in his Will it does appear extremely likely that Roger. And possibly Joan/Johane were from Wilbarston

Thanks, Ann. Where do you find the reference to Wilbarston?
posted by Jillaine Smith
In the Will of Symon Humfreys. Also looking at wills for Wilbarston there are Dimblebys there but not many wills for them and they are only accessible at a FHC.

Many thanks; can you please provide a citation so that others of us may look it up next time we're at an FHC?

I appreciate that you've identified a possible source for the home town of Joan and Roger.

You could have just marked it as a false error, since there was a Biography heading on the profile.

First mentions of all linked individuals are supposed to have links- ie. Roger Dimbleby.

Hi Scott, can you point to the help page or style guide page that explains this "supposed to have"? Many thanks.

Hi Jillaine, I have been unable to find where I read the part about first mentions, but in the style guide it says "Help the reader navigate WikiTree by linking to profiles of other individuals you reference in the narrative, such as parents, siblings, spouses and children." [1]

"Supposed to have" was too strong of a statement. Sorry.

Sisson-455 and Unknown-207892 appear to represent the same person because: Same birthdate, same two husbands & same date of death & location.

As she was married to a Dimbleby, I added that name as an Other Name.

I encourage researchers to look over the information in the following book for further information on Jone/Joan Swift.
