OBITUARY: “Seldom, if ever, has our community been called upon to mourn the loss of one more highly respected or esteemed than Sophia Skidmore Brown, widow of the late James W. Brown, who passed to her eternal rest on the evening of Saturday, Aug. 18th. The late Mrs. Brown was born at Canaan, Cumb. Co., N.S., on April 20th, 1864, and was 64 years of age at the time of her death. She was a daughter of the late William and Maria Skidmore, lifelong residents of Canaan, and on Feb. 16, 1884, was married to James W. Brown at Southampton by the Rev. Benjamin Hills, and came as a bride to the home where she has since resided. Being of an amiable and genial disposition, the late Mrs. Brown was the soul of hospitality; and her passing will leave a void in this community which will be hard to fill. Although the deceased had not been in good health for some time, and had been confined to her bed for a week prior to her death, yet her demise came as a distinct shock to relatives and friends alike. The late Mrs. Brown is survived by two daughters, Ada, (Mrs. Leslie Smith), Athol, N.S.; and Laura, at home; also by six sons, Lloyd, of East Southampton; Morley, of Springhill; and Franklin, Howard, Douglas, and Ross, at home. The deceased is also survived by five sisters, Sarah, (Mrs. William Tait), Athol, N.S.; Elizabeth, (Mrs. William Steeves), Amherst; Eunice, (Mrs. George Wilkinson), Glace Bay, C.B.; Emma (Mrs John F. Brown), South Brook; and Teresa, (Mrs. G.B. Mills), of Dorchester, Mass.; also by two brothers, Mr. Fred Skidmore of Oxford Jct., and Mr. Guilford Skidmore of Canaan; and by seven grandchildren.
