John Skinner migrated to New England during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640). (See The Directory, by R. C. Anderson, p. 307) Join: Puritan Great Migration Project Discuss: pgm
John Skinner was born about 1590, in England. His birth has been placed anywhere from 1590, to 1620; reportedly in Braintree, Essex, England (but without supporting evidence)[1] According to Anderson's Great Migration DIrectory, John place of origin is unknown.[2]
Disputed Parentage
John is said to be the son of William Skinner Sr. and Margarie Trotter, born c.1590 in Braintree, Co. Essex, England. He is also thought to be the son of Benjamin Skinner of Braintree, Co. Essex, born c. 1609. No definitive proof has been found for either set of parents.
Emigration to New England
John emigrated from England in 1636, arriving in Connecticut.[3][4][5][6]
Residency in Hartford
John was one of Reverend Thomas Hooker's party, and an original proprietor in Hartford.[1] At the annual town meeting in 1639, John was on the list of the proprietors receiving a portion from the division of land.[6][7] He received ten acres.[6] In the year 1640 John purchased land from Whitehead and Olmstead.[8]
Marriage
John married Mary,[9][10] daughter of Joseph Loomis Sr.[11][1][12][13] Their first child was a son, which they named John.[1]
Death
John died on the 30th of October 1650,[9][10] in Hartford, Connecticut.[14] He was laid to rest in the Ancient Burying Ground, in Hartford.[15]
John Skinner's children are named in an estate settlement, 18 Jan 1655, when his father-in-law Joseph Loomis was to distribute the estate to Mary, age 18, Ann age 16, John age 14, Joseph age 12, Richard age 8, and to his wife, married to Owen Tudor. The widow had married Owen Tudor on 13 Nov 1654.[16]
Not many records found for John in the early Hartford history. There may be more in the actual Town Record books.
Possible baptism: Descendants of the Founders of Hartford identifies him as the same John Skinner baptized 10 April 1608 at Braintree, Essex, England.[17] The identification seems to rely heavily on naming patterns. A search for the baptism turned up one for John son of John Skenner baptized 10 April 1608 in Wimbish, Essex, England[18] See on FamilySearch. [19] Wimbish is about 17 miles from Braintree.

Considering the uncertainty of his parentage, we might consider a less specific birthdate for him. based on the birth of his first known child, I would say before about 1615?
The Society of the Founders of Hartford: https://www.foundersofhartford.org/the-founders/john-skinner/ gives a specific baptism 10 Apr 1608 in Braintree, Essex, England. I'm wondering if there is a more recent article that has been published on his origins?
I found the baptism which was actually in Wimbish about 17 miles from Braintree. But it sounds like that author was relying on naming patterns, and given how common the names in question are it seems pretty speculative. I added it to Research Notes, and adjusted the birth to assume age 25 at marriage, and set the place of birth to England
This profile may need closer scrutiny. I just checked Sources 3 and 11 (Anderson) and while both mention Loomis Children they provide no evidence to the information being cited.
"If he married Mary Loomis in 1638 then at least 3 of his children are from a different mother, contrary to the facts shown at top of page."
