Biography

Anne Skinner was born, probably Braintree, Essex, England, about 1573 (she would have been 21 at estimated date of first marriage). Family

JohnA and Anne (Skinner) Talcott were the parents of six children, birth order uncertain (given below in the order each is mentioned in the father's wil),[12]

  1. John1 Talcott, born in Braintree, Essex, England, by about 1594,[13] died Hartford, Connecticut, between 25 February 1659/60 (treated by John Winthrop, Jr.) and 27 March 1660 (correspondence);[14] married, probably Braintree, by about 1625 (birth of child),[15] Dorothy Mott, daughter of John and Alice (Harington) Mott.[16] Immigrant to New England.
  2. Rachel1 Talcott, born in Braintree, say by about 1600 (see Research Notes), died Farmington, Connecticut, 24 October 1653;[17][18] married in Fairstead, Essex, England, 10 October 1622, John Steele, the son of Richard Steele.[19] Immigrant to New England.
  3. Anne Talcott, born in Braintree, by about 1604 (named in father's will),[20] died young, before 24 September 1616 (not named in maternal grandfather's will).[21]
  4. Mary Talcott, born in Braintree, by about 1604 (named in father's will), died young, before 24 September 1616 (not named in maternal grandfather's will).
  5. Grace Talcott, born in Braintree, by about 1604 (named in father's will), died young, before 24 September 1616 (not named in maternal grandfather's will).
  6. Sarah1 Talcott, born in Braintree, by about 1604 (named in father's will), died probably Hartford, Connecticut, before 2 July 1644 (husband married again); married, probably Braintree, by about 1626 (birth of child),[22] William Wadsworth.[23] He married (2), Hartford, 2 July 1644, Elizabeth Stone.[24] Immigrant to New England.

Moses and Ann (Skinner) (Talcott) Wall were the parents of three children (birth order uncertain),[25][26][27]

  1. Moses Wall (Rev.), born before 1613 (paternal grandmother's will) and not yet aged 21 in 1623; called "Rev. Moses Wall."[28]
  2. Lydia Wall, born before 1613 (paternal grandmother's will) and not yet aged 18 in 1623, presumed the Mrs. Lydia Holbeach "buried in woolen" at Falsted, Essex, 15 April 1682;[29] married Rev. Martin Holbeach.[30]
  3. Mary Wall, born before 1613 (paternal grandmother's will) and not yet aged 18 in 1623; married Robert Aylett of Braintree, clothier.[31]

Research Notes

WikiTree Pages of Interest.

Daughter Rachel (Talcott) Steele. Any reasonable year estimated for Rachel's birth creates some conflict within the Talcott-Skinner family group (2022), which follows the work of Sebasitan V. Talcott (1876), which follows the children's mention in the father's will.

Rachel was the second child and first of five daughters called out in her father's 1604 will. It is apparent from 1616 will of William Skinner (maternal grandfather), that of the five Talcott-Wall daughters, only 2 had survived--Rachel and Sarah. This is confirmed by the wills of their stepfather, Moses Wall (1623), and their mother (1636/7), although Sarah's name appears before Rachel's in the 1616 and 1636/7 wills.

As to the conflict, if Rachel is presumed the eldest of the five known daughters. If her birth is any earlier than "by about 1600," she would be over 45 years when her youngest son, Daniel Steele is born Hartford, 29 April 1645,[32] and Anderson suggests her daughter Hannah may have been born still later. If Rachel was born later than "by about 1600," she is unlikely the eldest daughter (the four younger daughters follow Rachel, all born before the father's will is written in 1604).

Youngest Talcott Daughters. As eluded to above, the child list shows all five daughters born from "say by about 1600" to "by about 1604." Even if there had been a set of twins, the time line is remarkably tight.

Daughter Rachel Talcott's Marriage. In his 16 October 1623 will, Moses Wall called her "Rachell Taylcott," but a Fairstead parish record shows she had married John Steele a year earlier, 10 October 1622.

Mary (Wall) Aylett. It was Anne (Skinner) (Talcott) Wall's daughter Mary Wall (not Mary Talcott) who married Robert Aylett. This association was published by Donald Lines Jacobus and Edgar Francis Waterman, Hale, House, and related families, mainly of the Connecticut River Valley (Hartford, Connecticut Historical Society, 1952), 746-748 (John Talcott), at 748; digital images, Hathi Trust. This is proven by a combination of will showing both that John Talcott's daughter, Mary Talcott, predeceased her maternal grandfather; and that Moses Wall's daughter Mary Wall survived. For the notion that John Talcott's daughter Mary did not survive, see the wills of William Skinner, 1616 (InternetArchive); Margerie Skynner, 1617 (InternetArchive). The evidence for Ann's daughter Mary Wall is seen in Moses Wall 1623 Will. See also profile comments/discussions here and here.

Martin Holbeach. Anne called him a "clerk" in her 1636/7 will, but is otherwise Rev. Martin Holbeach, known best for his work as school master at Felsted, where "Four sons of Oliver Cromwell were educated ... under Holbeach--Robert ... Oliver ... Richard ... and Henry." Yet other students included "Isaac Barrow and John Wallis, professor of geometry at Oxford, one of the most learned and able men of his age." See Thomas William Davids, Annals of Evangelical Nonconformity in the County of Essex ... ([?London], Jackson, Walford und Hodder, 1863), 386; digital images, GoogleBooks. From the same source, "in the parish register at Felsted, 'Mrs. Lydia Holbeach was buried in woolen, and affidavit brought, 15th April, 1682.'"

Previous Verson. Without further reference, a prior version of the profile reported Anne was born "about 1574" in Braintree, baptized "24 SEP 1575 Stoke Gabriel, DEV, England." She reportedly died "25 MAY 1637 Braintree, Essex, England" and was "Burial Felsted, Essex, England." The data field previously reported, without further reference, she died at Braintree, "6 Apr 1637."

A prior version of the profile included "In realilty, almost nothing is known of the wife/wives of Bigod Eggleston. The most complete and extensive treatment of Bigod Eggleston was published in 1991 by Rosalie Eggleston and Linda Eggleston McBroom [Bygod Eggleston: Englishman & Colonist and Some of His Descendants (Toledo 1991)], as "Entered by Tom Bredehoft Feb 2, 2013." If there are no objections, I would like to update Anne's profile. Specifically, this will include,
  • updating the data about her death (she was of Felsted at the time of her death)
  • removing reference to a christening at Devon
  • adding child list, including links there to her children's profiles.
  • moving reference to Eggleton to research notes
  • adding a number of reliable sources

If you know of other important information that should be included in her profile (or sources that should be listed), please post. --Gene

Skinner-4128 and Skinner-93 are not ready to be merged because: Again, there is not a shred of evidence for the wife Mary Wall of Bigod, but there is publish proof of the marriage of Mary Talcott Aylette and Bigod in 1638 in Dorchester, Ct. U.S. New England Marriages Prior to 1700. Also the wills of John Talcott, III and his wife Anne Skinner Talcott Wall, clearly state their child Mary Talcott at the time of John's death was a minor; at the time Anne's will was made Mary Talcott was a widow of Robert Aylette. Mary undoubtedly came to New England around 1637, where she met Bigod.

Hi Ruth,

Thank you for supporting WikiTree.

(a) New England Marriages prior to 1700 would not be considered a published proof (of an Eggleston marrage). The work is more of a finding aid; it reports some of the early marriages found in published materials. In the case of the Eggleston-Talcott/Aylett? 1630-35 by 1638 marriage, the entry cites works consulted as "NYGBR 23:122, 78:6; Beach Anc. (1936) 63; Hartford Prob. 1:194; Windsor CT 2:198; Coe-Ward 82; Nash Anc. 41-2; Morse (,1) 106-107; Henry (1905), 52-3 Chart; Botsford-Marble 212; Bassett-Preston 284."

(b) There is no evidence that Mary Talcott survived beyond 1616 (date of her maternal grandfather's will). The wills of Moses and Anne support that their daughter, Mary Wall, survived to become the wife of Robert Aylett. Mary (Wall) Aylett died between 30 December 1657 (date of will) and 1 June 1659 (will proved).

Skinner-4128 and Skinner-93 appear to represent the same person because: These two profiels represent the same woman, each had the same children, and as noted the same husband, although this may be in question. Merge these two profiles.

Are you aware that published recording of the marriage of Mary Talcott and Bigod Eggleston in Torreys and also U.S. New England Marriages Prior to 1700, Mary's maiden name is Talcott and added as a widow the name Aylett. This would be Mary the daughter of John Talcott and Anne Skinner before she married Moses Wall.
