slt13721 Family Tradition has it William MacGregor to avoid persecution from Jacobite risings he changed his surname to Skinner, he was of the MacGregor Clan. Also it was said that they fought on the wrong side, against the King in Scotland and he made them change their name. Some change their name back to MacGregor. I'm in the Y male tested Skinner surname group, I've been test with Ancestry, ftdna site mt full and FF, in the MacGregor surname group is has Skinner Y DNA male tested person with William Skinner Rev. as their ancestor that match the MacGregor Clan and there are other Skinner males in that group, this confirms the MacGregor rumor, I think. In my tree on Ancestry my line; Sheila Akins Thomas d/o Edna Frances Murphy-15194 Akins d/o Charles William Edward Murphy-14832 s/o Anna Bryant-9769 Murphy d/o Malinda Skinner Bryant d/o Madad Skinner s/o Courtland Skinner s/o ? John Owen Skinner-1170 ???? s/o William Skinner REV. b. about 1687 Scotland- ? and Elizabeth Courtland. As you can see I'm not sure about John Owen Skinner-1170 being the right connection, and I think some of the other people are not sure either. I have William & Elizabeth being the parents of Cortland Skinner Brigadier-GEN. 1727-1799, William Skinner Lt. Gen. 1729-?, John Owen Skinner-1170 1737-1801, Gertrude Skinner-99 1720-? in my tree.

The New Netherland project received a private message that says:

"William Skinner 1688-1758 - in my ancestry research I found him as William MacGregor (Skinner). It shows he took the Skinner name after he was wounded in 1715 and fled to England. The name supposedly had a connection to his mother."

This is all very interesting, but it is only tradition/legend at the moment, and the profile has no content and no sources. Does anyone have reliably sourced information about this man?
