Mary Jane married Stephen D. Jernigan, 1869 and William married Martha Ann Lucas Jan. 1871 Henry County Alabama. Their first child, Lizzie Neal was born December 13, 1871 in Alabama.
The Skipper and Jernigan families migrated west and are listed on the 1880 Census in Rusk County Texas. William and Martha have two daughters, Lizzie Neal and Maggie.
This census also shows Mary Jane and Stephen Jernigan have five children. Tragically, Mary Jane Skipper Jernigan died August 17, 1882 at the young age of 34, four weeks after giving birth to twins girls. She is buried at Pirtle Baptist Cemetery, Pitner Junction Rusk County Texas along side the twins, another daughter and her husband, Stephen.
After the birth of their sixth child in 1886, the Skipper family left Texas and
settled in Ringgold, Bienville Parish, La. On this 1900 census, Martha was shown to have given birth to 12 children, with 8 living. This infant, according to records provided, was born between 1887 and 1900. I know of the 8 children who lived to adulthood and one infant at Springhill cemetery. The other three children remain a mystery to me
In this 1900 census, we see that the oldest girls have married, are mothers and both without husbands. Lizzie "Neal" married Code Phennel/Fennell (Work in progress)

"Pa Skipper was a strong man, But like the rest of us Skipper men, he became weak in his knees and legs as he got older but his upper body remained strong as a mule. And he was that strong until Pneumonia got him. He was 88 years old. I remember the funeral and everything. Daddy (Roy Everett Skipper 1906-1979) bought me a pair of little knee "britches" and a white shirt. One thing I remember about Pa Skipper (great grandfather, William James Madison) was he grew a great big long beard. It was white just like Santa Clause. About twice a year he would ask Jimmy ( J.W.his son) to trim it for him. Boy, if Jimmy cut off to much, Pa would give him "what for"!!! He would say, "Jimmy !! Now you know you not supposed to cut off that much " !
But yes, we lived in the house with Ma and Pa and Momma took care of all of us".
