Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Henry Slade Sr. was a North Carolina colonist.

Henry Slade, Sr. was born about 1640 in Wool, Dorsetshire, England (1). His parents appear to be Henry Slade I and Vertue Darbie Slade. It appears that Henry had a brother named John Slade (5). (This has not been proven yet though; but is a possibility worth researching).

{On November 15, 1658 there was a court case in Lower Norfolk County, Virginia that involved a man named Henry Slade. Although it appears to be the 18 year old Henry Slade, Sr. of this profile, it is not certain. Furthermore, it is possible, but not proven, that this Henry Slade was actually the father of Henry Slade of this profile. However, it is just as well likely, that Henry Slade, born in about 1640, left England without parents, and they may likely have both died in England}.

In 1664 William Loveridge arrived in the Maryland Colony with his family. Many believe that Henry Slade was with them at this time. William Loveridge left Dorsetshire with his family and arrived in 1664 (5).

In 1668 William and Henry traveled to North Carolina with several other people, so that Henry could find land (11). Henry was either recently married to William's daughter Hannah, or was her fiancé.

In Virginia and what would become Carolina, the headright system was set up for providing 50 acres of land per person, or 'head' for anyone paying for transport into the colony, or for transporting themselves and families. During the first one hundred years of the system, there was no verification of transport, and no desire to check accuracy either. Names of people were passed around like currency, and those names then used at various counties to obtain headright land. This is why it is very common to see people transported numerous times into the colony. This is all very well documented. Everyone was in on it, and the land was free for the taking.

John West transported nine people into North Carolina and he was awarded 600 acres for doing so. Afterwards, Henry began transporting people as well. In 1669, he transported one person into Albermarle County, North Carolina and was given the award of 60 acres.

If Henry and Hannah had not married already in 1668, they are believed to have married in 1670 in Albany, Albany County, New York, where William Loveridge lived with his family. Hannah was William Loveridge's oldest daughter. Henry was 30 years old in 1670 and Hannah was 18 years old. It is possible that they were married in 1668, but any earlier date than this would be highly suspect, due to Hannah's age. Based on William Loveridge's Will, we know that Hannah was the eldest daughter, and based on his daughter Temperance's baptismal record, we know that Hannah was born before 1654. She was born about 1652.

On October 3, 1671 Henry was awarded another headright grant of land including Mary and Henry Slade . Assuming these two were his children, it appears that Henry Slade, Jr., was born about 1668-1669 and that Mary was born about 1670.

In 1671 Henry Slade received another headright grant in Surry County, Virginia. John Slade was with him at this time. He bought land that was adjacent to North Carolina. It is also believed to be near where Henry Slade, his father and John Slade lived (5), (6). Between January and June 1675, the Elder Henry Slade, passed away and was buried in Virginia. After wards, Henry Slade, Sr., and his wife left Virginia.

On June 17, 1675 Henry arrived in Currituck, Currituck, North Carolina with his wife Hannah and his children. They settled down on the East side of the Pungo River at the opening of a creek they called Slade's Creek. This was also called Blounts Creek.

In 1677 Mordecay Bowden made Henry power of attorney over his estate in Currituck. The northern part of the territory is presently composed of North and South Carolina, but at that time was called Albemarle County from 1663-1689.Currituck was a precinct of Albemarle County that extended from the Virginia line south to Pamlico Sound (7).

In 1680 they were living on the coast line of the Pungo River along Slade's Creek, which flows from the Pungo River.

When Henry's son Samuel was about 8 years old, he named a 3 ton plantation shallop after him. It was called "The Samuel of North Carolina" (4).

In 1693 a Virginia patent for land in lower Norfolk was granted to Henry. It was described as 1078 acres of high and low land on a plantation in Currituck upon the lower Indian Creek of the North West River (4).

Jan. 5, 1718 - Henry Slade, Parish of Hyde, "did about 20 years ago....give a negro girl with all her increase to Richard Jesper then in his mother's arms, he being the eldest lawful son of Richard Jesper and Hannah, his wife, my daughter, and at the same time desired my said daughter to take the said negroe girl named Moll in possession for the use of said son, Richard, my Grandson, until he came of age or married." Therefore, gives to grandson, Samuel JESPER,issue of said negroe girl, Molly "she and her master being now dead, and all her increase, the former gift being only by word." - 2 negroe girls, Sarah and Kate, now in posession of Richard JESPER, his father, to be delivered to him on his day of marriage or when at age. Wit: Samuel SLADE, Gi. HALLEDA Beaufort[2]

In 1703 Henry was involved in a court case on the 29th of March, but it was dismissed on July 27, 1703 (8).

On March 8, 1713 Henry was ordered to appraise a certain estate and to make necessary returns.

In 1715, he was assigned a Parish to work at as a Vestryman in Hyde County, North Carolina. He was a Vestryman in 1715 for the Church of England (9).

Henry wrote his Will on March 15, 1721 in Hyde County, North Carolina after the death of his wife Hannah, who likely died around that time frame. Henry died in about, or in, 1730 in Sladesville, Hyde County, North Carolina at the age of 90 years; although, others believe he died soon after writing his Will in 1721. It is safe therefore to say that he died between March 15, 1721 and 1730. He was buried at Hyde Parish Cemetery.

The children of Henry Slade, Sr. and Hannah Loveridge Slade were:

1. Henry Slade, Jr., born 1668-1669 or 1672; died 1718. DNA confirmation. 2. Mary Slade, born 1670 or 1685; died 1719. 3. William Slade, born 1674 or 1689; died 1713. 4. Hannah Slade, born 1678; died 1714. 5. John Slade, born 1680; died 1743. DNA confirmation. 6. Samuel Slade, born 1682; died 1746. 7. Joseph Slade, born 1687. 8. Benjamin Slade, born 1691.

Other Notes: Estimated dates of Marriage for Henry Slade and Hannah Loveridge by all other sources that I know of, are the following:

a. Before 1664 in Poole, Dorset, England; estimated by Jeremiah Slade. b. 1665 in Chuckatuck, Virginia Colony: estimated by miscellaneous sources online. c. Before May 1, 1668; estimated by miscellaneous sources online. d. about 1670-1671 in Albany, Albany County, New York; estimated by miscellaneous sources online.

Henry's Will was written in 1721, so he was alive then to be able to write it. If he was born before 1621, he would have been 100 years old. Henry was born about 1640, but not around 1600 to clarify. It was his parents that were born about 1615.

  • 1. U.S., Find A Grave Index, 1600s-Current. Based on when he died, he would have been 90 years old when he died. Even if he had been born before 1740, it would have been highly unlikely to say that he was born before 1730. He was about 90 years old when he died, and that makes his birth year be 1640. {For those that contend that he died directly after writing his Will, in 1721, even at that he would have been 81}.

2. Also, Jeremiah Slade's pedigree chart begins with Henry Slade as the first generation, the second generation was Henry Slade and Hannah Loveridge. Moreover, there are records of Baptism for Henry Slade with parents Henry Slade and Elizabeth and also a record of Henry Slade with parents Henry Slade and Vertue, Wool, Purbeck District, Dorsetshire, England, Church of England Baptismal records.
