Resolved Origins

Elizabeth was previously connected, without source and incorrectly, to parents being Roger Slade and Margerye Slade. As shown on the G2G post linked on her profile, Elizabeth's origins are now known.

August 30, 2022: her father William's will referencing "daughter Elizabeth and her children in New England" has been partially transcribed at this Free Space Page and together with parish records clearly lays out the family structure. A G2G post was made with additional details before adding her parents, William Slade of Colaton Raleigh & Sidmouth and Collett Martin, first wife of William.

Biography

Birth & Baptism

Elizabeth was baptized 8 October 1602 at Sidmouth, Devon, England as daughter of William.[1] Note that her baptism is transcribed on findmypast.co.uk once as 8 October 1602 and once as 8 October 1603. The 1603 entry includes a link to an image of the original parish register where the date is hard to read on Elizabeth's page but the previous page (which is the same year up to July) is clearly 1602 and easy to read, so 1602 is her correct baptismal year. She was the 7th known child of William baptized at Sidmouth and the last of Collette before her mother died and William remarried to Lucretia (Lee) Channon, widow of Edward Channon.

Marriage

Elizabeth Slade married John Upham at Bicton, Devon, England on November 1, 1626.[2] John, the son of RIchard Upham of Bicton, was born about 1599 (age 79 years, given in a deposition November 6, 1679). [3] [4]

John Upham, aged 35, his wife Elizabeth aged 32, sons John Jr. aged 7 and Nathaniel aged 5, daughter Elizabeth aged 3, and his sister Sarah Upham aged 26, were passengers for New England on the ship Marygould out of Weymouth, Dorset, England on March 20, 1635. [5] [6] [7] His family was part of a group of twenty-one families, followers of by Reverend Joseph Hull, previously rector at Northleigh in Devon, who assembled the group to set sail for New England. [8]

  • 1635: Arrived in New England and settled at Weymouth. [3]
  • 1635: July 8: Governor Winthrop granted Mr. Hull, minister, and the 21 families with him, the plantation at Wessaguscus (renamed Weymouth). [8]
  • 1650/1: Removed to Malden, Massachusetts. [3] [8]
  • 1662: July 2: John deeded the 'mansion where I dwell' with barns, outhouse, and several parcels of land to his daughter-in-law Elizabeth, wife of son Nathaniel deceased, reserving the right of myself and my wife Elizabeth until our decease. [3] [8]
  • 1664: October 13: He deeded his son Phineas his 12-acre homelot, with house, outhouse, yard, gardens and fruit orchard, reserving one-half the fruit, and reserving his and his wife Elizabeth's rights until death. In addition, Phineas was deeded two 4 acres lots of salt marsh, one being in Charlestown. [3] [8]
  • 1664: November 20: John Upham of Malden purchased 3 acres of Seth Switsher of Charlestown. [3]
  • 1670/1: February 2: John deeded the 'mansion in which I now dwell' with 11 acres, and 3 other lots to son Phineas, reserving his and his wife Elizabeth's rights, and the right's of Elizabeth Thomson, widow of son Nathaniel, until their deaths. [3] [8]

Elizabeth signed the above deed on February 2, 1670, but must have died soon afterward, as John Upham married second in August 1671 at Malden, Massachusetts, Katherine, widow of Angel Hollard of Boston.[4] [9]

  1. John Jr. born about 1628 [5]; buried at Weymouth on June 5, 1640. [10] [3] [8]
  2. Nathaniel born about 1630 [5]; married Elizabeth Stedman at Cambridge on March 5, 1661; died fifteen days after his marriage on March 20, 1661. [3] [8] [11]

I should have said the relevant page of the Will is the third page about a quarter of the way down.

It's not very clear but I believe it refers to Elizabeth and her children in New England.

Brad or anyone else experienced with reading old wills, can you have a peek at it please. I'll see if The National Archives have a better copy.

Nice find, Ann! Yes, he definitely refers to Elizabeth and her children in New England. Assuming no one else has already done so (a quick though incomplete check doesn't turn up anything), this should be published, especially if more can be found about William Slade and his family.

Thank you Robert, my eyes not so good and I thought it looked like New England but wanted confirmation so that is great that you have confirmed. Feel free to write an article, that’s not my thing, I just like digging up the records!

Partway through transcribing the will. William's second wife was Lucrecia Lee, widow of Edward Channon. His first wife was Collett Martin/Martyne; he had children with each wife. Elizabeth was daughter of Collett; she died in 1604 and then William remarried to Lucrecia. I'll set it up on a FSP here https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Space:1640_Will_of_William_Slade_of_Sidmouth%2C_Devon%2C_England&public=1

Thanks Ann, reading through it now.

I think this may be her father's will. I need to read through it properly but it appears one daughter was called Prriscilla and one of Elizabeth's daughters was named Priscilla

This entry records her father as Roger Slade. Is this source reliable?

Hi Gwen,

Thank you for your help with this profile.

English parish registers, even the corresponding indexed entries, are a reliable starting point As is the case with so many individual records, we find great information, but the single record lacks the detail needed to confirm the identity of the individuals beyond their name.

See the comment in the opening of the profile, "There is insufficient documentation to support her parents being Roger Slade and Margerye Slade."

Have you considered developing a G2G around the baptismal record? Perhaps the wider WikiTree community would be able to assist by identifying other relevant records by which we could advance the identity of those named in the indexed register entry.

Thank you for supporting WikiTree.

Are there guidelines to "developing a G2G around the baptismal record".

I am currently working on the OT2.

posted by Gwen Williams
Hi Gwen,

Other than including PGM in the G2G tags, I'm not aware of specific guidelines. Folks are welcome to correct the record if I am wrong.

We seek help finding information that confirms or conflicts with the notion that the woman who was the daughter of Roger Slade and presumably wife Margerye is the same Elizabeth Slade who married John Upham.--Gene

Yes it will; I'll protect it.

Will protecting this profile with PGM prevent parents from being added, Chris?
Removing unsourced parents, again.

This profile needs a source for the listed parents, or they should be removed.
