Notice to all readers: Research is on going, and new information may be found to add to this profile, or change information. If you can contribute primary source documents to help confirm information or correct it, please do so; this is a collaborative work in progress.

Samuel Slade Jr., was born about 1770 in Sladesville, Hyde County, North Carolina. He was the son of Samuel Slade, Sr. In 1777 they lived in Satterthwaite Companst. Hyde County, North Carolina. In 1786 they lived there still. On February 8, 1791 his parents bought 100 acres of land in Cheraw District, Marlborough County, South Carolina. The 1790 census was actually recorded for them in 1791.

[Note about South Carolina: In 1785 Cheraw's District, in South Carolina, was formed into three counties (districts), which were Chesterfield, Darlington, and Marlboro. Cheraw District remained with the county seat in Cheraw. The Great Pee Dee River flowed along the border of Marlboro County and Chesterfield County, and the Little Pee Dee River flowed along the border of Marlboro County and Dillon County, according to maps of South Carolina. Carlisle was the first town in Marlboro County, but it is mostly now known as Winnfieldville].

On February 8, 1791 Samuel Slade, Sr., and wife bought 100 acres of land from David Lee. He paid 10 pounds sterling. This was located on Muddy Creek, Big Pee Dee River, South Carolina. Muddy Creek is located at latitude 34.4999046 degrees, longitude -79.733117 degrees, in Marlboro County, South Carolina, at an elevation of 65 feet; 19.812 m.

On May 17, 1791 Samuel Slade Sr. and his family were living in St. Thomas, Cheraw District, Marlboro County, South Carolina, while they built a home on the property they bought. The Pee Dee River in Cheraw flows through the border line of Marlboro County and Chesterfield County, South Carolina. Its path begins before Wallace, Marlboro County, SC and continues to the border of Florence County near state road 95. Sam Sr., lived with his wife and son. In his household there was one male 16 years old or above {Samuel Sr.}, 1 male under 16 {Samuel Jr.}, and 1 female {his wife}.

In September 1795 Samuel Slade, Sr., sold his land at Muddy Creek to Samuel Burkett. They then moved to Barnwell County, South Carolina.

In 1800, Samuel Slade, Sr., lived next door to his son, Samuel Slade Jr., in Barnwell County, South Carolina.

Note that historians in the past have POSSIBLY confused the differing biographical information for Samuel Sr. and Samuel Jr., and have created just one profile for them instead of two separate profiles. Samuel Sr. was living next to Samuel Jr., in 1800, which confirms that there were two Samuel Slade's living in 1800. It is not certain which Samuel Slade [Sr. or Jr.] was married to Elizabeth Matilda Irby; however, it seems for now that it was Samuel Jr. that was married to her. Confirmation needs to still be made however, and any professional historians that could contribute to the research into this, would be much appreciated. Also, there are a few researchers that I have come in contact with, that do not believe that there is enough evidence to confirm the maiden name of Elizabeth Matilda as being "Irby". Leonard Slade's research provided her maiden name as far as I know, and I have no reason to doubt his research. However, for the reader of this profile, be aware that some researchers believe more evidence is needed to confirm that she was indeed an Irby.

In November 1808 Samuel Slade, Jr., applied for a passport so he could travel through the Creek Nation in the Mississippi Territory.

In 1809 he was one of the people that signed a petition in the Mississippi territory.

In 1810 they were living in Washington County, Mississippi. In 1817 they were living in Hancock County, Mississippi. His wife [Elizabeth Matilda Irby, it is believed] died in about 1818.

In the 1820 census he was a widower in Marion County, Mississippi.

In 1830 he was remarried and they were living in Augusta, Perry County, Mississippi. They had a son between the ages of 0-5.

In 1840 they were still living in Perry County, Mississippi. He was alive in 1842, but had passed away by the next year. His wife Sarah was listed on the census in 1843.

Samuel was born about 1770. Samuel Slade ... He passed away about 1845. [2]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Samuel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Samuel:
